I give up... (rant, read at your own peril)

It's been weeks since I got this game and it simply refuses to work. I've tried tinkling with my video, sound, and I even tried installing a crack just to see if it would run. I have -never- had this much problem getting a game to run save for maybe ultra-old games from the DOS era. In short, this game has been a total waste of time. I love Black Isle dearly, but I wish they would just stick with what they know and leave the fancy graphics and special effects to the games that need it and focus on what they've always been good at, namely gameplay and storytelling.

Sorry for the whining, hope you all had better luck than I did.

Sorry for your trouble, but I did. I just put the CD in the drive and installed and played the game.
Have had no such problems at all.

Minor correction: Bioware produced this game. ;)

I presume you have tried all the patches?

From everything that I've read and heard about NWN, the key is your video card. If you don't have a state-of-the-art 64Mb card, you can forget about playing this game. I've got a new computer, so I had no problems at all but, apparently, all the tinkering in the world will not adapt this game to an older system. IMHO, it's part of a greater conspiracy between the box-makers, hardware suppliers and software companies to force people to keep upgrading their systems beyond what most of us need for day-to-day computing. BG2 and Ultima Ascension were just as graphically complex as NWN (and far better-looking) and run fine on an older 16Mb card.(shrug)

I'm running Neverwinter Nights with a 32MB Geforce2...and it runs fine...

I would suggest a few things once I know whether the patches have been applied. In theory it shouldn't make much difference how up to date your graphics card is (as in model not driver set the drivers should be as up to date as possible), the most important thing is whether it is nvidia or ATI, since the ATI cards are nothing but trouble for NwN.

I have a GeForce video card, and the game ran really slowly when first loaded. I downloaded updated drivers for the card ("detonator drivers", I think), and it's run beautifully ever since.

That is actually incorrect. NwN (here comes a small version of an earlier rant, sorry guys  ) Is a very hit and miss game. For 2/3 the gameing community, it works fine, no errors, problems or issues. For that other 1/3, though, it is bugged, choppy, or doesn't work at all (I was one of this 1/3 of people) Many were recommending cracks, and patches, but the real issue lies in the fact that it has a hard time dealing with many custom computer set ups. It is not so much an issue with a specific piece of hardware, but rather the combination of that hardware. When I first purchased it (day of release) I met all the recommended specs, and it worked, to a point. The game would freeze upon starting of the story, yet all my hardware, and software was surpassing the game requirements. At first, I figured it was my ATI Radeon card, so I tried on a friends with a GeForce 4 MX card, with the same results.

This is not a fault of the programers at Bioware, or of the gaming community, but rather of poor Beta testing. It was tested all on set computers, without introducing the variable of a custom computer job.

All this considered, though, I have opted myself to give it another shot, and hope it works (found it half price, and got a new comp  ) Hopefully, it will work this time, and I'll allow myself to remove my trade embargo on Bioware products...

I'm definitely not a computer wiz, but my graphics card is an Intel 82810, which I'm sure is not that great, but once I turned all the video settings down, and installed w/o texture packs, it runs choppy but playable. *shrugs* Who knows?

No, indeed, that is...erm...well...crap, not to put too fine a point on it :) On board graphics do not a lovely environment make. ;)

I had similar problems with BG1 on my sister's computer (which I borrowed this past summer)- the game sometimes crashed, didn't save correctly, etc.

Maybe it's Bioware *shrug*

May God help you Aegis

This is going to sound whiney, but why do you, Osiris, have an Eye of Ra under your name.
