What is it exactly I'm doing? Can I do it for every character? Is it esentuly 50 battles. five at each rank? Also how do I open the room to the North East, I think it has Oria's or whatever her name is. seal on it? Is this , the battle squares, something to milk slowly or is it something to finish right away? Any advise would be helpful,

Any character can do the test. But the character that starts one series of fights will have to finish that series.

You don't need to do all the tests. Just doing one test and conquering tree squares in a row is enough (I think) to give you the key to Oriah's room.

I did all the tests eventually to get the bonus equipment, but it's not easy and somewhat boring after a while. You can get a few levels immediatly but I suggest coming back later to do the higher levels with a better party.
