I have cleared the exterior of the Asylum and entered, but nothing, I mean nothing is happening. I cannot open any of the doors. I understand I am supposed to be greated by someone, but nobody appears.

When I try to leave the area across the bridge everyone is turned to stone. I am trapped and cannot go back to a saved game. My next earliest saved game is over 40 days of play time earlier.

Any suggestions other than the obvious?

Congratulations, you just found the "I go to the Pirate lord, talk to him and dont get commited to the asylum, then I use the stone from the adept to get in and nothing happens when I get inside" bug.
Fix?
None, reload and make sure that either get the pirare lord to commite you or go the the adept, kill him and use the stone, never take both paths (go either by the pirate lord or the stone, never talk to the pirate lord if you wish to enter by the stone or dont go to the adept house if you want to use the pirate lord to get in).

I think Kevin has a patch that fixes this.

Who is Kevin and how do I get a hold of him to determine if he has a patch?

Kevin Dorner, I am sorry but I did not know that you have fix it already since I heard about this problem a few time ago.
As far that I knew that was no fix...
