Without question, the Ring of Human Influence. Then I could walk up to Bill Gates and "persuade" him give me controlling interest of Microsoft.
Next would be the Helm of Vailor. Then I could go play golf all day while my simulacrum labours as Microsoft CEO.
Finally, a Club +2, a chunk of Illithium, and Cromwell's Smithy (along with Cromwell) to forge me a Golf Club +5 of Acccuracy with which I will kick Tiger Wood's ass!

I agree on the Potions of Intelligence for the coming exams
The Bag of Holding would be great for carrying groceries up three flights

(or a ton of textbooks)
One of the figurines - like the Moon Dog or the cat one. That would be great to have! (And sic on a mugger in a dark alley, or take with you on trips and not worry about getting another plane ticket)
Ring of Influence would definitely be practical, as would the Ring of Infravision...
I suppose if I could only have one thing, I'd get the Bag of Holding. Great for moving stuff around, dangit.

Girdle of Frost Giant Strength. I could win the heavyweight title with my "lucky belt." And you know how much money top boxers earn!
Bag of holding. Perfect for robberies!
Boots of speed. Ditto.
Staff of the Magi. Crime again. Also, Protection from Evil handy for keeping Republicans at bay.

Interesting you chose the Staff of the Magi, Moriveth, since holding it will make you invisible. Very appropriate considering Democrats in positions of power and influence in Washington have all but disappeared.

Did I say anything about being a Democrat, "EMINEM"? I'm an anarchist, you moron--as if my choice of items based on their utility in petty vandalism didn't make it clear enough.
Very well then, I'll explain the obvious: When you're breaking into some fat cat's mansion, the last thing you want is for him to exercise his Second Amendment rights. Thus the staff.
(apologies all--couldn't resist the temptation of a political flame from someone calling himself EMINEM on a gaming message board)

Tough choice: Tomes from BG1!, Ring of Human Influence, Staff of Magi, Helm of Vailor, Gridle of Frost Giant Strength, Bag of Holding, Crom Faeyr, etc, etc...all things I'd love to have.
But if I had to go with one item it would be the Ring of Gaxx. Anything short of instantly fatal is just fine in minutes. Broken leg...no problem. Severed limb...no problem. In addition it gives Imp Invis and Imp Haste (Fencing? Mt Biking? Olympic 100yd Dash?).
Just a thought: Potions of Genius or Mind Focussing might actually be depressing if you had a limited supply. Imagine what it would be like knowing you used to be smarter. Heh, maybe I'm thinking about all this too seriously
On the lighter side: Why not Viconia?

Although it isn't in BG1 or 2, an amulet of water breathing would be handy.

Wow thats a tough one, I am tempted to say ring of gaxx aswell. Or maybe like someone said girdle of frost giant strenght, add in gauntlets of crushing and you are readt to take on tyson.
Invisibilty would be so cool though.

I've already successfully brought back the cloak of mirroring and the amulet of magical protection, but as nobody has yet cast a spell at me, everyone assumes I'm just wearing an unfashionably shiny cloak and a overly fancy necklace.

Some Heroes stand, some Heroes fall, others can't 'cause they got hit by a fireball.
