load times and lagging gameplay

I'm a novice player. I truly love this game because it has rekindled my love for fantasy that I neglected during college. However, these damn load times and lags in gameplay (particularly combat) are ruining the game for me!

I have a dell pentIII 600mgz 256mb. I've done a full install, downloaded the English patch, upgraded to directx8.0 and even defragged my hard drive. What else can I do to make this game perform properly? Please advise.

Check the tweakguide for BG2 here: www.tweak3d.net./ it gives a lot of tips on how to increase game performance.

Try turning off environmental audio. That seems to be a fix for many when it comes to lag.

May not help. I have no environmental audio but the game jerks horribly sometimes and the loading times? I always have my Rubik's Cube ready when playing BG2.
I suggest that the problem is elsewhere. Look at the script compiler. What it does? It parses a simple if-then-else blocks and parameters of the predefined routines. It uses external files for its data. If you think that it must fit into 15kB exe then you are correct. See the size - 1.5MB!!! What is the script compiler doing within 1.5MB is a mystery for me. Also check the run times. Even a primitive source needs a considerable time period for compilation even at PIII 550. If the whole BG2 is written in this quality then do not wonder the loading times and jerking.
