Installation problems

Man, just went down and bought the game thinking I would finally have a weekend with time enough to get into some serious IWD2 playing... But then!
When I insert the disc (cd1) and press the install button, a pop-up pops up (no wonder, huh?) with the message "Can´t find file setup.exe"...
I´ve tried absolutely every trick in the book, and I also visited interplay´s troubleshooting site, and tried everything they suggested. Store´s closed now, AND tomorrow, so I might as well try to get some help here...

Have you try the basic thing ? Run Windows explorer and browse the CD. If there's setup.exe in the CD perhaps you CDR Drive require cleaning.
Also have you try run the setup.exe manually ?

Yup, it just shows the "illegal action"-pop-up.

This occur after you choose to run it manually, right ?
OK can U specify what system u r running & what progs you got on while you do this ?

Err Kiddo, I´m not really into all that stuff...
All I know is that I´ve got 466MHz...
Yes, it occurs after running it manually, AND automatically.
Interplay´s trubshooting suggested all kinda weird things, like deleting everything in my C->Windows->Temp folder, but that didn´t work out either. (did a backup)
This is pretty darn frustrating, especially if it´s my comp, and not the disc that´s messed up. Anyway, I´ll get it swapped by monday, but any help is, of course, still appreciated.

Here's some list :
1. What type of OS your PC have
2. Is there any Anti virus prog running while u r installing it ?
3. Any other program running on the back ground ? You can see this on the right side of your Windows taskbar - next to the time indicator

OS = operating system or your windows version
try disable your NAV and install the game. I mostly disable everything when it comes to install new games on my HDD
<EDIT> I'm off for now; hopefully others will take over for me

Sounds like a faulty disc or CD driver conflict to me.
If Explorer won't browse the CD: Replace the game, check your CD drivers.

Alright, will do!
I just find this enormously strange... I mean, I´ve never had this kind of problems before.
Also, when I open the my computer folder, the d-drive (when IWD2 disc is in) has the windows-icon (the one that means that windows doesn´t know what program to open the file with), instead of the IWD2 icon. Plus, when I open the disc, the ico.exe file has the same windows-logo. (it´s the one that looks like a coloured flying flag)
I´m using windows 98..

OS...Operatins Sytem...windows 95, 98, xp etc.
Try turning off you anit-virus, like Kid said. Also, is there another computer you could try to install the game onto? a friends or something? That will tell you if it's the CD or your system. If you can manually find the setup by browsing, but you can't run it, that could point to either a bad disk, or a bad CD-Rom, or one or the other being dirty and needing cleaning. If the game installs on another computer, then you will know for sure that it is something on your system. According to what you are teling us, you wouldn't even have to sit through the install, just pop it in and see if it comes up with the same error message or goes n to the install process.
If it does work, then let us know what OS you're running.

Well, turning the AVP off didn´t work either, so I´m gonna have to try installing on one of my friends comp...
I´ll let ye know how it fares. Thanks for the help, btw!

Also, is you Win98 the most recent updated version?

@Grunty; I have no idea... How do I find out??

Jaesha, it depends on your Win98 version.
It'll either be:
Start>Windows update
Start>Settings>Control panel>windows update
Start>programs>somewhere in applications
Or go to M$ website and look for their update section. It'll patch your OS (which probably needs it if you don't know how to do it).
Follow the instructions regarding scanning and installing for critical and security updates. I'm actually doing this right now for my dad's win2K PC (on 56K modem, it might take 2 hrs total for all installs, which you can do bit by bit).
I am thinking perhaps your version of win98 needs updating to prevent conflict with the IWD2 disc.

Aight, I´m updating now, which will take approximately 16 min.
*taps fingers in hope*...

Cool.
When you said you could browse but just couldn't run setup, I heard that some new games are now having problems with win98.
Update!
You have earned it - relax and enjoy IWD2][ Now get out there and make some stories for the Wailing Virgin tavern.
