Can low enough saving throws ever make you immune to psionics?

First began wondering about this a few months ago when my, I thought then, invincible Kensai was clearing out the Watchers Keep, he'd just swallowed a Potion of Magic Shielding or whatever it's called (+50% magic dmg res) and all of his saving throws were at -20 something. Still, he didn't even last 2 secs in the room on the 2nd level full of those sirens. They seemed to simply ignore saving throws.

After that I gave him up and have never played a char that wasn't immune to charm somehow since. But I was wondering if one really can save vs those charm attacks? Is the HUGE saving throws bonus given by the magic shielding potion just a display bug, a real bug, or even an intended effect?

sounds like a bug....your saves should not have lowered...this is the potion of protection from magic or magic damage???

magic damage?????

you should not be drinking the stuff unless you expect to run into mages casting abu dahzims or skull traps....

a kensai cant wear the incredibly common helm of charms,,,,,

but he can use the greenstone amulet, dual wield the equalizer, and try out the ring of free action from spell hold...you need to unequipp and equipp after casting improved haste on self, but i have seen dominated icons and i was still able to kill the vampires after being dire charmed....

So it was the potion that raises your resistance to magic damage. I don't know why I had swallowed it, maybe had a tough mage fight just prior to ecountering the sirens or something.
But I do get massivly lowered saving throws when I drink one, don't know if it's just a display bug or if the game really accounts for the new values.

I'll repeat my main question, are there any psionics in the game that ignores saving throws?

I think just like low armor class, you can never be "immune" to psionics. There is a very good spell, chaotic commands, that makes you immune to psionics(most) and last a long time.

Think those pots add a +4 saving throws bonus on top of the 50% MR, haven't verified for sure though.

The description says you get 50% resistance to magic damage and that you make every save. The effect is saves lowered to below -20.
However some of these alu-fiends and succubus seem to cast charm like that of the mind control circlet, no save.

so you guys got tactics mod from wes???

spoilers

i posted this a long time ago, in his forum...time to share the secret....

you get with tactics mod 3 greenstone amulets...

one in underdark, 2 at the docks...the gnome illusionist waiting for vaygar, and kangy guardians...

the 2 in the docks makes you immune to psionics simply by equipping them!!!!! without having to use a charge!!!!

easy to prove, finish firky, and get sewer key, then open up the door in the sewers in the temple district...the party is hit by a short duration psionic stun when you enter, mindflayer lair after all, and the two people still standing around, not stunned had on those two greenstone amulets....they also stood around when you enter the mindflayer lair in the underdark and youre hit with a stun blast...i ve seen dominated and direcharmed icons on the two npcs who wear them, and nothing affected them....warning, the underdark one needs to use a charge to make you psionic immune...

also, the improved shield of harmony, and upgraded lilacor via item upgrade makes you immune to psionincs...

so does the anti mindflayer sword in tob...but the greenstone amulet is so convient....

That is just like the pre ToB greenstone amulet... Don't like the ToB one cause my swords get charmed and scared and whatnot all the time... a potentially great spell made useless...

Hi Rataxes,

The Succubi & Alu Fiends have a special charm person ability. It's almost impossible to resist if your PC is a male and isn't immune to charming. You'll have to equip an item (Adjatha the Drinker, Equalizer, etc.) to protect yourself. This is the one case where the sex of the PC matterrs and is why I tend to use female solo characters.

As for psionics, it is possible to have low enough saves to ignore them. Even my Imp. Mind Flayers abilities have saving throw checks (though in some cases you'll take 1/2 damage). Some Mind Flayer abilities (stun, charm esp.) come with penalties like -4 or -2, so you'll need at least saving throws around -4 or so. It doesn't appear that BG2 uses the rule of a roll of 1 always fails regardless of saving throw. The intelligence drain of Mind Flayers doesn't allow a saving throw however.

The one and only answer, thanks Blucher :) I take it a temporary sex change will also make you immune to those types of charm attacks no?

UserUnfriendly, is there an online read-me or something for that Item upgrade mod? Want to see exactly which, what and how they upgrade.
