Strength effects on missile weapon damage?

Well, my day isn't really complete if I haven't asked an annoying question or two, so here goes - I'm trying to get clear on what effect (if any) STR has on missile wepon damage - I know Dex affects the THAC0 rather than STR, but does STR have any effect on damage? If so, is it the same as normal melee effects?

Also, does skill improve THAC0, damage and weapon ROF for missile weapons like it does for melee?

It's hardly critical, but I'm curious ;)

I'm not sure but I belive that the only thing u need str for when using a bow is to pull the string back, this str varies between different bows. But is has no affect on the amount of damage other than the lasrger the bow the greater the damage it does.

I believe that, in BG only, strenght bonuses are added to missle weapons.

Some big bows have a minimum Strength requirement, but only slings seem to add Strength to damage. Maybe throwing axes too... Slings rock!

Slings are great for clerics and druids, since it's the best ranged weapon they can use. In TotSC I believe you can get a Sling +3.

What's the effect? I thought that you had to use +1 ammo to get the bonusses and hit things like FleshGolems?

It works exactly like any +3 item. It adds 3 to damage and 3 to thac0, but IIRC u still need to have a +1 bullet to hit flesh golems......

I don't think there are Flesh Golems in the original Baldur's Gate, so you needn't worry about that :)

Slings are the only missile ammo weapon that can be used with a shield.

Thrown weapons (axes, daggers & darts) can but they do not use the missile ammo slots so you run out too quickly. Also, they have a shorter range so you can't use them in conjunction with, say, a fireball spell.

The main problem with slings is they have a very slow rate of fire.

Slings can be used with a shield (as mentioned) for big AC bonuses, and they add Strength bonus to damage (perhaps unrightly so). If you have good Strength, one sling shot does the same damage as two bow shots, but you get the shield on top of that.

What's the strenght I should be thinking about, or does it follow normal strength stat lines just like other weapons.

This is a good point, but in all fairness there are arrows that do much more damage that any sling bullet (piercing and biting for instance). But with similar ammo you are quite correct.
