New player - desperately need help with simple things!

I am a brand new Morrowind player and I have a couple of basic questions that I have not been able to find answers to, in the game manual or in the official strategy guide. Please help if you can, and it's really not necessary to point out how ignorant I am, unless you really can't resist!
1) Armor and Fatigue - can I run faster if I'm not carrying any armor (and/or wearing it)? Does that reduce my fatigue? Seems like that sort of punishes the fighter class, since it takes SO LONG to get anywhere in this game.
2) Weapons and using "best attack" - does it mean the weapon's best attack, or the best attack for the circumstances? For example, when you set the game to always use best attack, does that mean it will always use the attack for your weapon that does the highest damage (always slash or always thrust, etc., depending on weapon), whether or not that's the best way to hit, or does it account for your position and that of your enemy and use either a slash or a thrust, etc?

Firstly, welcome to GameBanshee
Secondly, check out my Yellow Pages thread (link in sig) for some sites that might give you some tips, but don't spoil the story for yourself

Yes. Heavier armours slow you down more, as does being near your weight limit in general. It does sort of punish the fighter class, but since there are so many methods of fast travel and the fighter with heavy armour is probably the best class in the game anyway, it all evens out. And it makes sense in an RL way, too.

When you select "Use best attack" the game will automatically look at your weapon and determine which attack (Chop, Thrust, Slash) does the most damage, and it will always use that attack. So for example, if you are using a spear, the attack that does the most damage is always the thrust. With Use Best Attack, the game will always thrust, even when you're not strafing (which you would otherwise need to do to get decent damage)

Keilah -
And welcome to the world of Morrowind.
It is kind of a drag how s-l-o-w you run at the beginning. It's even worse when, having completed the game with really high Speed/Endurance/Athletic scores and become so used to moving along at a fairly brisk pace, you start a new game and you're back to being slower than a mud-crab.
Fortunately in MW, skills/attributes increase with use and the more you use them, the faster you advance.
So, hit that 'run' toggle key and RUN everywhere you go. But don't just run, SKIP - every third or forth step, hit the 'jump' key. You'll be rewarded with (up to) 5x modifiers on your attributes when you level up.
Another tip - mix and match your armor. Wear some light and some medium/heavy; this not only increases the armor skills themselves but light contributes to Speed and medium/heavy contributes (IIRC) to Endurance.
Keep us appraised of your progress. Enjoy.

I myself feel totally disgraced if I do not at least sail through the air before my feet touch the accursed earth for more than a few steps (okay not that crazy, but close

)

rnrules -
Then you'd love the jumping in Gothic (3rd person view) - on real long jumps, your arms windmill and you come down crouched in a ball and roll forward and come up still running, though I seem to recall sometimes you miss and bellyflop and slide instead.

It's a shame my parents make me put most of my money into college savings, if not, I'd probably have most of the RPG's, but with just morrowind, I'm thoughly occupied, I don't think I would have time to do more than 2 at a time some of the are so !@#$in big!

I find myself jumping off very high places now that I'm a decent acrobat. It's nice, sometimes you land too hard, you hear a crunching noise (your kneecaps, I presume) and your health drops a bit. But it does wonders for your athletics and acrobatics! One jump off the saida neen watchtower will save you hours of jogging and skipping.
The ultimate kick is taking a rising force potion and flying straight up until the potion has finished. This way, you can really damage your health, so don't try this @ home!

Don't follow this piece of advice, you'll just kill yourself

Have you ever hit the ground, right when the game has to load for the terrain for a few seconds. It's like a red tunnel, pretty creepy too. (7 days.... lol jk)
