I Thought in Edwin, great mage

You need a good fulltime mage. Edwin's excellent, but he's evil, and if you're playing a game without any cheesy patches (not saying you shouldn't; just pointing this out), he'll scream as your rep begins to naturally climb. He may eventually leave. So consider one of the two good NPC sorceror add-ons available out there: Kelsey, and Tashia. I'm sure you've seen 'em mentioned here. In fact, if you glance down the threads on the first couple of pages here, you should find "mods" mentioned, and can get a link to the sites for their download. Just worth a thought, IMO, though I'm a big Edwin fan, too.

I dont really like usin mods/trainers. kinnda negates the purpose of having rules(not always). I'll prolly end up taking Edwin anyways =)

It depends if you like to use many spells, or to bash anyone on your way. If the former, Edwin is the best, and make sure you watch out your reputation. It the latter, I recommend Keldorn.

Edwin's certainly good. However, the add-ons I mentioned don't do anything other than add a couple of party NPCs. There's nothing "super" about 'em, and their dialog is eminently suitable to BG2--can't give higher praise than that.

Still, it's up to you; best of luck.

Solafein or Valen will be a good tank. If you have played SoA many times through, either of these NPCs is definitely worth your while.
My two cents.
Cheers.

Well, Edwin is my favorite NPC spellcaster. I always add him to my party.
In the current game I am playing, my party is:
- Me (Mage/thief also

)
- Keldorn
- Korgan
- Viconia
- jaheira
- Edwyn

Why do so? Isn't it more fun to meet the challenge of keeping your rep within limits, or bringing in a party member who won't worry about how high your rep goes? Just download the Tashia or Kelsey mods.

or sk edwin into sorc....
be warned, you will experience a stutter bug....
not a servere stutter bug, where if he walks in certain directions he glides, but i figured out how to fix it...remove high speed regen items off him...low speed, like the white ioun stone seems ok, but anything at ring of regen or higher makes him stutter....
i always thought of him better as a sorc...any sorc really is better than edwin, even with his obscene spell slots...good careful spell selection is always the key...

Drop Anomen, Minsc and Jaheira.
Bring in Viconia and Edwin.
The best additional tank for this line-up (outside ToB) would probably be Mazzy, never had her in an evil party but I guess it's fun.

I'm not sure what you use as a basis on who is good in your party. Statwise and production I would say pick up either Keldorn (for Carsomyr, True Sight and his Dispel Magic), or a pure spellcaster like the aforementioned Edwin (or if you want to stay neutral or good, download the Tashia, Kelsey mods).

Be sure you run Edwin's quest. The results are loads of fun, and change depending upon whom you have in your party when you succeed, and Edwin achieves...some results.

the gnome (jan) is better than nalia

Jan, no question. Nalia has terrible thief skills, having dualled over to being a mage. By contrast, Jan is a multiclass thief/mage. I'd say he's the best thief in the game, and his mage skills make him an effective second string caster. When he gets to ToB, he really takes off, since he can learn all mage spells, and can get the skill to use any item.
