A multiclass is available to non-humans, basically they gain EXP in both classes at the same time.
A dual class is only open to humans, and they choose one class. Then they can choose to dual to another class, stopping the gaining of EXP in the first class. Basically, their second class starts gaining EXP from level one, and they cannot use their old classes skills until they reach a level higher with their new class.
It *is* a bit confusing...

That's a dual class character. If he were a multiclass, you would be earning experience in several classes simultaneously.

Multiclass:
Pros:
Any race can do it.
You can gain levels simultaneously in two or more classes.
You keep your abilities in each class (with a few limitations--like mage/fighters, who can't wear armor if they expect to cast spells)
Cons:
Since your experience is split evenly, you gain levels more slowly.
Dual Class:
Pros:
Since you're only running one class at a time, you gain levels faster.
Once your second class surpasses the level at which you quit your first class, you have both sets of class skills and spells at your disposal.
Cons:
Only humans can do this.
Until your second class surpasses your first in levels, you lose all access to your first class' spells and skills.
I think that covers the basics.

hehe almost there now. im still confused about dual classes, but im not sure how to explain why im confused.....
or maybe not. (after 10 mins of thinking about my question)
Will he lose his 1st class ablities if they surpass the 2nd class? or does the 1st class not gain exp after u start dual classing?

Once you dual class, the first class doesn't gain exp or levels. Ever.

Once you choose to dual class, the first class is forever at the level you are at when you choose a new class. Example: if you are a fighter and dual at lv. 13 (so you have 3 specialist melee attacks per round) and go to be a mage (assuming you have the requisite INT), you can use no fighter abilities until you are a mage lv. 14 (as Fable pointed out) and once you are at lv. 14 mage, you get your fighter abilities back--but you no longer gain exp in your fighter class, you are stuck at that first class level you dualled at. All your exp goes to your new (eg. mage) class, so you get lots of spells, etc.

If you think this is confusing, try IWD2 with its 3E rules.

DC has slight advantages over MC in case you take fighter as your first class, eg you can get weapon mastery and full HP bonus on con.
The backdraw is that your first class will be inaccessible for a pretty long time if you dual late (say around level 13-16). Btw, keep in mind that DC requires at least a 17 in the prime attribute of your second class. If you don't have ToB keep in mind that the XP cap might not allow you to reach a higher level in your second class than you have in your first class.
MC characters are easier to design and you don't have to wait half of the game until you get your abilities back.

Another good thing about Multi-Classes is that you can access both classes high level abilities in ToB, opposed to Dual-Classing, which allows the 2nd classes high level abilities only.

the most attractive thing about dual classing is you can choose a kit for your first class.....
now i have to admit, kensai mages rule, but has anyone ever tried the anti pally dual to mage.....oh my gosh, the anti pally is a powerful kit to dual from....
dispell magic per hit???
inquisitor dispell, and true sight???? immunity to hold and charm???
its obscenely powerful...
urm...would be funny if you installed sabres multi stronghold, walking into the radient heart and ask for your room...
but i gotta admit, the dispell magic per hit is really powerful...gave ability to bun bun, and it really rocks...

Yep...
I LOVE the assassin/fighter. Dual at level 13, giving a 5x backstab (more than good enough, IMO, 7x is almost a gimmick to play with what is otherwise a weak attacker for longer) and a fast poison (as well as 4 uses of it), and enough skill points to hide/move silently at will as well as take on another skill of your choice (detect traps or illusions seems to be best). Once he's become a full assassin/fighter, he is INSANE.

I have never played the assassin fighter. I can see how it was a good class in SoA but if you have ToB a fighter dualed to thief must be better... a pity you can't dual to a kit.
Pure assassin is awesome though. Multi fighter/thief is also very good.

Wizard Slayer / Thief is interesting too - once you get UAI, you can use all magical items ...

At one level did you dual your Wizard Slayer? Just curious.
