Unless one removes the cap, there is no legitimate way of memorizing level 9 spells.

You need 18 in INT before you can memorise 9th. level spells, it has nothing to do with your level -
you can't cast them unless your level 18+.

You can memorize 9th lvl spell legally if you have 18 Int, but you can't cast them from your spellbook legally (only from scrolls)

Again, there is a shift of terms, i feel. What actually you cannot - learn or memorize? For learning you might use the Potion of Genius and, if not enough, Potions of Mind Focusing to raise your INT above 18. Not sure if it matches true D&D rules, nevertheless it works in this game. I've taught 9 level spell even to Arie such way on occasion

It is a waste of good scroll, though.
As for memorizing, you should have at least level 18 mage, what is not supposed to be in this game. You may still cast it by scroll, though, if you have one to waste. There is no need for INT 18+, Nalia has INT only 17 and may cast one on level 18 (yes, she is; yes, cap is down).
HTH,
L.
P.S. Hops! Check out for your case yourself nonetheless. I have Level 50 ruleset.

the problem with 9th level spells is that if you have a lot of them the exp. is really good even though you wont be able to use it. on the other hand a level 9 spells can do a huge diffrence in a tuff battle so every time I have a lvl. 9 spell I have a dilemma
but i think that it sucks that there are so little use of the 9th level spells. In a normal game you only get to use a lvl. 9 spell some 3-6 times or so. they should have made it possible to use them more often and if they fear for the game-balance its only a matter of giving the later foes a little kick up. it is a shame that they made so many cool spells and they are so far in between. let's face it the coolest spells are lvl. 8 or 9 (IMDO anyway)

It is possible to cast 9th level spells MANY times from the scrolls - just equip them in your quick slot and cast project image or simulacrum. Your image/simulacrum can then use them from their quick item slot, allowing you to endlessly recycle them. I do this with the Time Stop, Spell Strike, and Wail of Banshee scrolls.
Project image: lvl 7 spell that creates copy of self with same spell capabilities, but easily dispelled by True Sight, so don't rely on this one around mages. However, this one is great for handling everything else, and allows you to re-use spells without having to rest.
Simulacrum: lvl 8 spell that creates copy of self at 60% of current level. This is the one to use around mages who like to use True Sight. He can't cast as many spells as original, but remember you're using him to recycle those lvl 9 spell scrolls.

i was thinking about this and doesnt this mean that the only npc in expansion pack to be able to cast level 9 spells will be edwin. if so , this sucks, i will play a good party and therefore will i have to play as a mage to get a half decent one

Maybe they'll give us a way to boost stats permanently again...or mage robes that increase int, or whatever...

If you plan on using the experience cap remover so that you can use those level 9 spells (which is really, really, really cool btw), you have to increase the game difficulty to counter balance the effects of such spells.
A mage or sorcerer really depends on his Intelligence, so have to pump this up to the max when rolling your stats. I tell you, it is WORTH it. Imagine a level 20 sorcerer being able to cast 6 time stops. Is that cool or is that cool?

That's why there's an experience cap remover that you can download and put in to your overide directory. When you creep to level 18, adjust the game difficulty setting to counter balance what you did.

I going to say this.
BioWare is not taking under consideration the XP cap remover saved games in ToB, I suject that you keep the XP cap on until ToB.
Unless you want trouble to potencialy show up.

i dont fell that a cap remover is nescearry, when ToB is coming out in a few months, and that you start out on level twenty. Now a editor that lets you fight more than one Irenicus thats another story.......

Well, it's your choice mates.

Am playing BG2 to have fun. Well, let's see now. Gate? Now that's fun. Time Stop? Oo, a lot of fun too. Now's my chance to tickle Irenicus to death.

there could be serious trouble with your character in tob (as i think fable pointed out in another topic) what if your supposed to get skills at lvl 30 and you start the game at lvl 40?

Garcia, there's always a higher end at which very powerful items/spells exist, and they're going to be rare. That's what makes them more valuable, and part of the game fun/strategy is figuring out where to use 'em. Remove the cap if you want to compensate, but I'd rather keep the cap in place, not duplicate the spells with Project Image, and just play with BG2's deliberate limitations. This is my fourth run-through, and I'm content.
