Fighting Basics

OK...I'm getting toasted every fight so far. Swam across to the island to find the dead guy...and a sandcrab was kicking my butt. Thank goodness a guard was there to save me.
Then, in searching for the murderer, I found his home. He attacked me with fists...I drew my shortsword. I've been killed twice so far....and have yet to land a hit.
Any advise on fighting? Darn sandcrabs....

OK, actually killed a guy. Saw another thread that gave me a basic clue...so I changed my weapon. Still, took a pounding; over 3/4 of my total health points from a guy using his fists...while I was armed with a longsword.
So I still think I need some tips.
Also, can't find ANYWHERE to rest in the first town. When I ask anyone about SERVICES, they tell me the place...but I see no option from the store owner (nor anyone else in the store: 1st or 2nd floor) on where or how to rest. Also, clicked "T" to rest just to see what happens...got arrested. Reloaded and waiting for advise since I'm too weak to go anywhere right now.

It's almost impossible killing anything in the first couple of levels. You could stick to mudcraps, and just running around, till you get enough points for leveling up. Optionally, you could buy points from a trainer. This is expensive, but it works.

Go outside of the town to rest - i.e. sleep on the ground. You'll know you're far enough away when you don't get the "illegal to rest here" message when you press "T".
There is the possibility of being attacked while you're sleeping, though.

The reason why that guy is hard for new players is because he does fatigue damage (all hand to hand attacks first damange fatigue and only do health damage when the target is out of fatigue). New characters aren't exactly loaded with tons of fatigue points, which means a few hits from him will knock you down. Once that happens, you get stuck in a situation where he knocks you down, you start to get up, he hits you and knocks you right back down.
The good news is after you gain a couple of levels you'll be laughing at folks who attack you with thier fists. The bad news is, at low levels, you might not be able to take him in a fair fight. So stack the odds in your favor.... make sure your fatigue is all the way full up -before- starting the fight. If your fatigue gets close to running out, leave the shack. He won't follow. Stand around for a minute or two while your fatigue restores itself, then go back in and whack him again. Repeat as neccessary.... his wounds don't heal, while your fatigue (which isn't wounds) do.

Yeah, it's one of the existing bugs which has been around since day one and Bethesda has never bothered to fix. You have a couple of choices:
1. In the census office where you made your character, there is a bedroll that you can use.
2. You can sleep outside of town, but may get attacked.
3. You can go to a mod site like
http://www.morrowindfiles.com and look for a mod that fixes this... there are a few, sort of unofficial bugfixes.
4. Say to hell with Seyda Neen, go to Balmora, have fun there and only come back to Seyda Neen after you've gotten a couple of levels.

Remember to pull back and hold your weapon for a bit before releasing it. This maximizes damage. That should help in your early battles. Also, if your opponent falls, immediately take advantage of that and beat 'em to a pulp. Their defending value really drops for a few seconds.
When in doubt, run away. Live again to fight another day.

Also, if you have killed the murderer, you can use his shack as a home base in Seyda Neen. You should be able to sleep in his bed/hammock by pressing spacebar to use it.
If you don't like his house, there are several other open houses with commoners you can kill and use their place as home.
Of course this last would require your character to be of an evil temperament.
