Some box pops up stating that it isn't neccessary for me to use my final save to get here. Yet, no matter what I do, the place is still grayed out.

Is there any particular route that I'm not aware of that is required to get into Ulgoth's beard?

Leaving the Baldur's Gate Bridge map from the north side should enable you to travel to Ulgoth's Beard.
