i picked planescape: torment out of the bargain bin at hastings this week for, like, 16 bucks. basically on the strength of the many recommendations i've seen for ps:t on this board. after playing it for a few days i am really pleased with the purchase and in a lot of ways, it suits my playing style even better than bg2.

so, thanks to those who suggested this game in the past.

and: i saw a game called wizards & warriors which seems to be based on ad&d rules. it was the most expensive rpg game i saw, yet i don't remember anyone mentioning it. anyone played this? if so, how does it compare?

I don't like it much. It has a first person 3D world view, and the monsters spawn randomly. You build your own party, but they don't have any personality. What's worse, the race choices are really strange. There's a race of tigers, rodents, and elephants. I don't think they talk or anything, so it's hard to get a feel for them. I heard it got bad reviews too.

PS:T is, IMHO, every bit as good as BGI and II. You also can't beat the, er, clothing choices of Sigil's female inhabitants Image

i bought ps:t second hand and it is really cool, morte is sooooooo funny. also the nameless one really kicks some ass. It took me a while to get into but now i love it, it is different to the bg games but i would say if u like bg2 u will like ps:t, i dont know anyother game where u can stop mages casting spells by simply insulting them so they charge at you with their melee weapon.

one of my fave bits in it is when the one eared man says to leave or he will have my guts for garters and i reply

"if its garters you want have these, your mother left them in my bed last" night"

So, do any of you Torment fans miss being able to talk to your party members? Instead of waiting for some dual-timed dialogue alarm to go off and have them talk to you. Image

That said, the stories, npc interactions and nonlinear quests of BGII are all improvements (IMHO) on what Torment offeres. Like they used Torment to figure out how to do NPC stuff, and Icewind Dale to do combats, just to make sure BGII was as good as it is.

W&W is the newest creation of D.W. Bradley, who designed Wizardry 7:Crusaders of the Dark Savant. Those of you who don't know, Wiz7 was far and away the best CRPG ever made when it came out. Sadly, that was 10 years ago and business concerns disintegrated the original development team and blah blah blah... you know the story, it's like this whole HasBro thing, but ten years after. Anyway, the Wizardry community has given the game pretty mixed reviews, and I've avoided it by playing BG, but I will say this for Bradley: He designed a game 10 years ago that only BGII, IMHO, has even come close to matching in terms of scope and story... try "The Ultimate Wizardry Archives" and see if you like Wiz7, it'll be cheaper than W&W, and show you what he can do. Of course, by the time you finish it Wiz8 is supposed to be out, which should just about tide you over until the May release of the BGII expansion pack... ;-)
