I killed all the priestess , the mage wount let me have my favour , and I cant get the door open to the altar , I have used the prism but I still get the same reply about the " shadow " inscribed on the door

You need to access that room by the painting by the stairs on the floor above the one you are currently on , I can't remember the specific line to pick though

@Bloodstalker is right. But you don't get that choice to work until you've succeeded in clearing the place out.
