archmage?

how do i become an archmage in the mages guild? currently i'm a 'master wizard' (the level before archmage) Skink in sadrith mora has no duties for me; but if i talk to trebonius he challenges me to a fight for the title of archmage. In one of my saved games i killed him, but i wasn't officially 'archmage', i then went and talked to skink, guess what he had duties for me...he wanted me to deliver a note to trebonius which would make me archmage...But if i dont kill trebonius skink wont give me any duties
whats the deal??

You may also leave some duties if you're master wizard and are directed to Trebonius by Edwina. Just speak with him about Archmage and you'll have an option to duel. It's one of most easy lines because there's quite enough to do all duties for only 2 Guild chapters (and probably solve Disappearence of Dwarves for Trebonius) - very different in comparision with Thieves' Guild, where you need all chapter quests and Bal Molagers in addition.
