im in mournhold. ive acquired a barbarian that wants to help me search the sewers as he is looking for someone down there. thats ok although he neds to be led step by step sometimes. when im up in newmourn he has his ax out all the time and if i have hand to hand he kills my opponent. i had to lock him in a hoom to go places in the city. can i disable him some other way or give him some manners. how do you deal with companions?

Very carefully - since they have an annoying tendency to get in your way. What I do before picking up a companion, is scout the area where we'll be going beforehand, kill any attackers, then come back and get him/her. (I save often, so I can go back to a prior save game when I realize an NPC will join me.) In the barbarian's case, the friend he's looking for is in the sewers directly below the Godsreach area.

Indeed, the best way to free yourself of temporary companions is to finish the associated quest as soon as possible. When the quest is finished, you will be on your own again. Sojourners tip about clearing away enemies in the path is a good one, you always run the risk of accidendtily hurting the person you are escorting in a fight.

You can do the quest in stages: when you are escorting someone, you can talk to him or her about the subject 'travel together'. You can usually ask your companion to remain where he/she is and do something else. Later, when the way is clear, you can pick him/her up at the place you left him/her to continue travelling together.

I've found having a stack of Cure Paralysis potions on me at all times extremely useful in Mournhold. Blasted Jinx Swords. *grumbles*
