Not sure which character is best for me

I've played Baldur's Gate I and II and am just starting NWN. I've already completed Level I with a elf rogue/wizard but I'm not enjoying it because I am too weak with melee and I'm finding that I don't really like being the background fighter. I want a character that is good with both melee and ranged weapons and uses stealth. I've been reading that rangers are pretty good for this and also have the dual weapon bonus. However, since I only get one henchman I have to do without 2 of 3 classes (rogue, wiz/sorc, cleric) and I'm not comfortable with that. Should I dual to rogue and, if so, how to divide the levels so that I can be the melee fighter? Thanks for the help!

I played through with a Halfling fighter/rogue (4/14 levels respectively). It was a really good experience (I played without a henchman BTW). With the use magic device skill, magic is not a problem since you can use anything in the game.
I dual-wield with shortswords (or maces when fighting undead) and daggers.

I would advice you to play a monk. It is pretty hard till you reach lvl 8 or so, then you are pratically invincible. Monks: good melee fighters and resistant to magic/desease and poison (when you reach certain levels).........I love them
You won't need the thief class, because the monk has brilliant saving throws, you won't need armor spells, because the monk has an AC that scares off most enemies and you won't need attacking spells because your enemy is dead before a spell can be cast

I found my avatar browsing some fantasy-sites. Don´t know exactly where I found it. I didn´t make it myself, wish I could do that.
