With all the various discussions of the Sorcerer going solo, I'm just curious on how you beat creatures that are highly resistant to magics like dragons and golems. Also how you manage tough battles like the ones with Kangaxx and Shangalar.

There are a few spells that lower magic resistance, can't remember their names, so you can either learn them or cast from scrolls. With tough battles against Kangaxx and that, they do magic attacks, so you can you magic resistance spells on yourself. This way you're invulnerable to their attacks, while the spell last.
Oh, and there's also a strategy guid for sorcerer if you want to know how some one else played them, you can download it here: http://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgateii/downloads.php

In addition to Sabre's sage advice...
Do not forget summon. You should have spells for it, and there are items enough to do it, the Staff of Fire, for example. Animate dead, IMHO, is must-be for any sorcerer (at 15+ level it gives you the Skeleton Warrior). You can still read scrolls, too.
There are some items letting you shapeshift and at least three scrolls and two spells to shapechange, and mind flyer might kill by draining intellect, for example. Well, the trick with mind flyer perhaps is not the way you're supposed to go, but there is a lot of other approaches.

to finish of golems i use:
-stoneskin
-mirror image
-fire shield red (very inportant does much of the damage)
-lower resistans
-magic missle (though they have magic resistance there are always somemissles how manage to go through)
for drow:
-stoneskin
-mirror image
-fire shield red
-web
-summon skeletons or spiders
-lower resistans + magic missle (if needed)
Dragons:
-stoneskin
-fireshield red. (it prevents damage to, love the spel)
-summon spiders, skeletons (just to keep him busy)
-lower resistanse
-finger of death
one thing lil' bit of topic
for liches and vampires use the prot from undeath scrol!
without it í don't think i could finish the Twisted Rune or Body's Lair. Make sure u always have a scrol or 2 with u it is very good.

Mordenkainen's sword. It is not cheesy to use it except against mages (who should have cast Magic Missile or Chromatic Orb, if it weren't for a dumb AI).

I haven't soloed yet, but I have success against dragons with a high-enough level mage and :
1) Wizard's Eye (opposite side)
2) Trigger spell with:
a) Lower Resistance
b) Lower Resistance
c) Greater Malison (Or another Lower Res.)
3) Finger of Death
Robe of Vecna helps with a single magic-user, of course. I don't usually bother with summon or defensive spells when having one magic user facing off a dragon this way...
