can somebody tell me what for the hells are the ward stones used for?

What chapter are you in? The first set of two ward stones are to allow you passage through a trapped door in the goblin fortress IIRC...

Are the first 2 ward stones needed to act 2?

@Manbeleth, I am not quite sure I understand what you mean, but the first two ward stones are literally just to allow you access through a trapped door in the goblin fortress, after that they have no use that I am aware of
