Dispel Spells?

There's so many different ways of countering enemy mage spells.. Breach, Spell Thrust, Secret Word, Pierce Magic, Ruby Ray, Pierce Shield, etc.
What spells do what? When a battle starts, enemy mages become a swirling and pulsing blob of colors.. and I need to figure out how to bring those colors down so my characters can smack them around.

The best way to figure out what has happened is to first check the dialogue window and see what spells they cast. Then if spell sheild is cast, cast a fast spell removal spell, and then if there is any other spell protection cast the lowest level protection removal spell you have that dispels the magic. Then all the spheres around the mage should go away... if not keep casting removal spells as the mage then has multiple proection layers.... when all is gone throw in a breach and voilá, an unprotected mage(which has a chain contigence which protect him again, sigh, and the circle goes on and on)........
the best way I think to kill mages with protections is to send a fighter with cromfeyr+flail of the ages +3/+5 and/or a pal with The holy avanger +5/+7.

To be honest, I don't realy use dispell spells alot.
Usually a breach or a dispell magic, and the rest melee.
But to realy kill mages use insect plaque (duid spell) to distrubt spellcasting.
Or even better, a good backstab from you're thief

Breach will remove all protection spells.
Ruby Ray of Reversal/ Pierce Magic/ Secret Word all knock off things like Spell Trap and stuff.
Or, you could use Keldorn's Dispel (Inquisitor's Dispel is counted as twice their level), but you'd also lose your own protection spells.

Okay.. so Breach gets rid of melee protections and RRoR/PM/SW take care of spells that block against my spells?

*blinks* That's kind of simple.
Thanks. I guess I just need to learn which spells counter which protections.. it's like a game of rock-paper-scissors with 5 elements. Ugh
Hey, is there a chart somewhere that lists what counters what?

Xyx's site has all you're looking for...and so much more you should probably never see.

You should read all of the spell descriptions in the manual and make a list of the spells that counteract each protection spell. (Be sure and cross-reference it; the description of some protection spells will tell you which spells will and will not counteract them. Lots of them CANNOT be dispelled by Dispel Magic.) That's what I did.
Then, whenever you're in battle against a spellcaster, make a note of which protection spells he's using and use the appropriate spell(s) to counter them. That's what I always do.

Also, True Sight is always useful. It dispells illusion based protections (ie. Mislead, Mirror Image, Invisibility), which is necessary if your mage wants to cast other spells. Breach is useful, but you cannot cast on someone you cannot see.

dispell magic-> for rescueing your party from chaos, confusion, domination....
remove magic-> for anti lich work, they are immune to breach, also, a triple remove magic in spell sequencer can dump anything, to my experience...
breach-> all you really need...you dont actually use spells against spell casters, do you??? breach and whack, the smash broadway hit....breach will also dump elemental protections, so the solo sorceror can still have lots of fun...
ruby ray-> a triple in chain contingency will target and hit improved invisible monsters, to get rid of spell immunity....yes, i am talking about tactics mod...this is the only spell protection removal spell you need...its alteration, so it bypasses spell immunity abjuration, and it gets rid of spell immunity itself, so your remove magic works....
true sight-> incredibly easy to counter with spell immunity divination....both monsters and pc's do it now...sigh....
khelbens warding whip->sometimes works on certain encounters, but i can confirm it does not work on spell immunity abjuration...still, it still seems to spell disrupt certain beginning dragons, so its ok....
these are all the spells you ever need for taking stuff down...

The link works for me.
That's really good information, and it's very well done. (Thank you, Xyx, Alson, and Littiz.) However, their chart of "spell protections" only lists spells that offer "protection from spells". When I think of "protection spells", I also include spells that offer protection against physical attacks. It would be nice to post a chart cross-referencing those as well. (If there's one on Xyx's site, I haven't figured out how to navigate to get to it--sorry.)

An interesting idea. Especially the elemental damage protection spells can be confusing (Protection from Energy, Protection from Elements...).
We might look into this.

this would be a very cool idea...how many people thought, until they read the guide and then cross referenced it with the actual description in the manual that secret word is useful against stoneskin???
its really easy to misunderstand just what spell protections do and how to remove them...
like this...
spell immunity: may be removed by spell strike and ruby ray of reversal.
protects against spells and elemental attacks...(see spell immunity invocation for more details...) dispell magic will not work on spell immunity...but spell immunity will not stop physical attacks....

a different spell-question
Just to hook up with the subject, Jon Irenicus casts the spell "Absolute Immunity".
Is this an altered string from another spell (like spell immunity abjuration)or is it a real spell? Couldn't figure it out...

Take a look
here on the gamebanshee spell list and click on Absolute Immunity. This gives you the spell description
This is what Xyx has to say about it
Absolute Immunity
Don't bother attacking, unless you have Melf's Minute Meteors or some similar special spell created items (such as Slay Living or Harm). Since practically every (even slightly) dangerous creature has attacks that count as magical weapons, this will still not get you much (if anything) that level 6 Protection from Magical Weapons (and/or Stoneskin) won't
