I have completed the game, and meet 5 dragons, if I remember correctly.

5?
i can only think of 4, and one of those you really don't fight unless you are evil.

Maybe, I could be mistaken with that one as I never fought him.

the color is Green and there is no need to fight any of the dragons, but the black takes all your things(plus he have the bladesinger armor), the red is plain evil(tied to the paladin quest, besides the scales and the holier avenger), the shadow is also evil(the scales and part of the super hammer), the silver is good(dont kill her if you are good it useless, kill her if evil and for the evil armor thing alone, she is very hard)and the one in hell is part of the test(kill, you are evil, not you are good)

Don't you need to kill the black dragon in order to eventually open the gates to the elven city?

No, you can give him all you have and he will give you the cup....But I belive that he is too greedy for his safety, and I kill him...
(besides I am stronger that he, so why sould I give him my stuff, he sould give me HIS stuff and he did....hehehehe)

@Drakron, did the green in hell breath chlorine gas in BG2? I don't remember which path I took and don't recall it using it's breath weapon.
