Multiplayer Question

I haven't played on multiplayer yet, but my friend is getting the game this weekend and we're gonna play modem-to-modem. Question is...can you talk to eachother during the game? Like in Diablo 2 where you can talk to everyone in there and most other games... I just hadn't seen this discussed in the FAQ or know any place that the chat screen would pop up on the interface. Answers are appreciated, as always.
