I took on Renal Bloodscalp's quest, but I refused to kill that wizard that Edwin wanted me to. Edwin got angry, left and sent his lackeys after me. I killed them but Ma'Var still tells me to speak with Edwin and he is gone... how can I get the proof for Renal if I take this path?

Well, if you want to end the quest the messy way, just go kill MaeVar and his lackeys. Then go talk to Renal, he'll yell at you for a while, then you're done. You lose out on the reward and the XP, but otherwise you have the peace of mind in knowing you finished the quest--sort of.

Well...

You could kill Edwin if you can find him, he drops the key - at least he did the one time I decided to go that route.

Copper Coronet? Or maybe he's in the Shadow Thieves building since he's really working for Renal. Those are the only two places I can think of.

If you complete Edwin's quests, he will ask to join your party. If you don't let him in, he'll go to the Copper Coronet and you can talk to him again there.

If you make him angry, I don't know if you'll ever see him again.

Hmm, I never tried refusing to kill the Cowled Wizard. I am always ready to fight those guys, except for the one in Umar Hills.

If Edwin is not in the Copper Coronet, then he is gone for good. He is not working for Renal; he claims that he has other, unspecified, loyalties. Your only recourse in this case is to kill Mae'Var and take the heat from Renal for blowing his quest.

*SPOILER*

On the other hand, you could just ignore Mae'Var and Renal and continue about your business. Renal goes away in Ch 3 and it might be worthwhile to continue doing business with Gorch, the fence.
