Lost level/multi-class when re-join party.

After I left Jarial in the tree, so that Faeril could go with the party on her quest, I came back to the tree and Jarial's levels and exp had dropped and he lost his multi-class rogue.
What gives.. is this a bug or is part of the game?
I can go back (i have a saved game) to before I let him go, and chose a single class player to leave.. but I would rather just have him back.
Oh.. of course I rebooted game and no change.
I did search here a little, but could not find my issue.
