What's the deal with taunting?

Whenever I taunt somebody it fails. Do you need a high speechcraft or something?

What you need to do to successfully taunt someone if your speechcraft is low is to get their disposition up by admiring or bribing them. Don't worry about losing lots of money when you bribe them because you'll get it back from their dead body.

So, get their disposition up to about 50 and then taunt them until you have a taunt success.

You will have to do this several times until they say "Goodbye" to you and then attack you. It's quite a long winded process at first but it's worth it and your speech craft improves every time you do it.

Ahh, thanks. I hope it works, because it saves me a huge bounty.

Speechcraft is probably one of the most important skills in the game and one that IMO you should work on as early as possible. There are a quite a few early guild quests that rely on being able to admire or taunt NPCs. Try to find someone of the same race as your character to practice on so you get the racial bonus to perception. Hopefully you've made it a major/minor skill so you can get the level ups at the same time. Now practice admiring that racial buddy until you are blue in the face and your hand is numb from clicking the mouse. I find commoners more easy going that other NPCs when it comes to admiring them.

Another thing you can try is buying/learning a cheap frenzy spell. Then have a spell maker create a couple of customized versions of it at varying power levels or have an enchanter put it on a ring or amulet. This is invaluable for picking fights with NPCs from your own great house or who otherwise are immune to taunting.

One great way to improve your 'speechcraft' is on the slaves. They are inconsequential (except in one quest), and a captive audience. When ever I would run across them, I would taunt them all the way to zero, they will not attack if they are cuffed. Then, if they were in a smuggler's cave I would free them..boom !!!, they like you again. Flatter them up to 100. Then taunt them down to zero again. Most often, they still wont attack you, even when freed. Your speechcraft will shoot up in no time :)
