I love all the character choices in BG2. In your opinion, what is a good initial character to play. I want to maxamize my limited time with good quests, weapons and maybe some spells.

Do you prefer flexibility/originality, or just pure power in a character?

People like thieves, because of their backstabs and/or trap-setting, but a PC thief is redundant with the NPCs available. A power choice would be a barbarian, berzerker, kensai/mage (dual), or berzerker/thief (dual). Flexibility/gameplay choices would be bard (skald), sorceror, monk (powerful later, but cool throughout), or a paladin kit.

And as for the quests, they don't vary much by class (only the strongholds, which are minor). Also, you can have maximum flexibility simply by choosing your NPCs carefully, so getting that in a main character isn't essential.

I like to go with a fighter-type for my main PC. I love Mages, but I just can't ever seem to make them survive. In the last parts of the game, in my opinion anyway, magic gets too complicated with spells and counterspells and spells that neutralize other spells.

So my first game I went through as an Elven Ranger, and my second time I'm going through as a Paladin Cavalier, and currently I'm trying to kill a red dragon that's really pissing me off.

just my opinion...

My suggestion (and it is only a suggestion) is that you make a fighter type. Any kit.

Playing a fighter definitely makes the game easier, but I like sorceres. My suggestion is to read about the different classes, maybe ask about specific ones you find interesting, then pick one you like.

I also tend to think that it is best to start with a fighter type of character. I usually start all my games with a paladin (Ultimas, Quest for Glory, BG I and II, Icewind Dale etc.), but I think you should choose if you want a samurai-type of warrior a dual weapon fighting machine or your typical sword and armor knight-paladin.

Has anybody chosen from the beginning a jester?? I think it is the most irrelevant of all the kits that come with the game.

I played both games with a half-elven fighter/mage and it was great, I really like my character... in the end of bg2 (chapter 6 and ahead) I found all the fights kinda easy

I'm only sorry I only got to levels 13/13, but still I could cast a lot of cool spells and wield the crom fayr in battle
