Abazigal

I must sound really stupid, but I really can't get through Abazigal.
When my fighters get near him, namely, Sarevok, Minsc and Jaheira (don't ask about my strange party), they just get blown away, if they are not instantly slain (happened once to Minsc). If I cast Time Stop, it almost always fails, and if not, lower resistance doesn't work for ****. Elementals almost intantly die and Planetars are ****ed up in a few seconds....

Please help!

I recently did the improved version of that fight... *eek* talk about challenging..
In that instance I really overdosed on all of my potions and buffed with every spell possible.
Also, If you haven't already done this, summon your help before casting the buffing spells....

I remember that was a tough fight... I think I was saved by Chain Contingency with Stone Skin, Improved Mantle and Mass Invisibility. Mass Invisibility helps, because it covers not only the mage but also other party members for some time to quaff portions, and you can attack under the spell.

Yup, there are a few words computer automatically replace with *s. It can be annoying, because you can't type the name of the famous movie director, for example... You know, the one created Rear Window and Psycho.

Welcome to GameBanshee forums, anyway. :)

I found Abazigal actually the easiest of the Five. Why?
I lured the human form in with some summons and killed it of with a greater whirlwind warrior from behind. When he changed into the dragon I moved my sorceror, equipped with the right stuff like Amulet of power and Robe of Vecna into range:
cast Timestop,Improved Alacrity,Trigger 3* lower resistance,4*Abi Dalzim=Dead Abizigal or at least Badly Injured Abizigal and your melee should be able to kill him off very quickly

Also, there are some frostsalamanders in that area you ought to take out first. They're not much of a threat but they're certainly distracting when you're fighting the dragon.
Have your mage or sorcerer target him with a couple of Lower Magic Resistance, then hit him with Feeblemind. Works okay!

Doom and Greater Malison(sp?) might help too by lowering his saving throws.

In the Improved Abazigal version (part of the Tactics mod pack) there is also another dragon fighting by his side and some annoying wyverns. It makes the battle much, much harder. He is no longer the easiest of the five.

Just dice him and slice him while keeping your mnages back to dispel his comabt protections. Improved haste and whirlwind attack (not together :) ) on your fighters hould outclass him. If not, buff your figthers with spells and potions. The only time I played ToB I had a two weapon fighting figther/mage with tenser's transformation etc. though, so I might be spoiled... :)

I didn't find Abazigal particularly challenging. My strategy was to summon a bunch of strong pets (a Juggernaut Golem, a Deva, Mordenkainen's Sword, a Fire Elemental, and an Elemental Prince), and buff them and my party with the standard Prot. from Evil 10', Bless, Resist Fear, Defensive Harmony, etc. I had my bard Georgiana, Jaheira, Imoen, and Cernd cast Stoneskin/Iron Skins, as well. I used the summons to hold off the Frost Salamanders while sending my tanks (Georgiana, Anomen, Jaheira, and Keldorn) to attack Abazigal. If one of my characters got seriously hurt, I would have him or her retreat to be Healed by one of the three clerics/druids. Once Abazigal turned into a dragon, continued to beat down, having Georgiana Breach periodically. Meanwhile, Imoen cast Time Stop, hit Abazigal with a spell trigger with three Lower Resistances, then cast Dragon's Breath and Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting. Cernd cast Implosion, and suddenly Abazigal was no more. Quite refreshing, after being destroyed by Draconis so many times that I finally resorted to the cheese of spike traps to kill him.

When in doubt, traps kill all and don't discriminate.

Greater whirlwind will get you out of most fights. Just make sure you don't spend your whirlwind on your back away from him.

My party was doing great against Abazigal, but things started to get really weird after a few seconds. Using powerful weapons and spells, I managed to knock the stuffing out of him, but he just WILL NOT DIE. He's stuck at "Near Death" forever. It doesn't matter how much I level drain him or hit him with melee weapons or dispel his magical protection spells. He is really near death, but he has become invincible.

I have even tried cheating (CTRL+Y), but it doesn't kill him.

Same thing happened to me. I just reloaded, fought Abazigal again and he died as he should. I don't know, I guess it's a bug.

magic

From memory he is more subject to spells than some of the other dragons.

Cast a couple of barrier reducing spells (eg warding whip, ruby ray of reversal) and then try something serious on him - whatever you have; comet, meteor storm etc. It will ware him down.

Also, in agreement with the other posters, buffs make a HUGE difference in these types of battles, as do summoned creatures. I find devas are particularly effective, and take an awful amount of punishment. They usually have the heal spell and will heal your own party members as soon as they need it.

As for the wing blow effect, if your character arent automatically running back to attack the dragon, physically clicka few times to ensure they do. You can really kick this guys ass with melee weapons that are decent (+4 and above for example).

Barriers are the key though - a lot of these dragons cast protction from magical weapons and ironskin on themselves, so you need remove barrier spells to make them vulnerable to your melee attacks.

I personally thought that this guys was tough, but not a patch on someone like draconis or demogorgon.

One tactic that can work well is to summon 5 creatures (eg an elemental or 2, a deva and some mountain bears). If nothing else they take the fattacks and punishment from the dragon, leaving you free to wreak havoc.

Also, experiment with mocing your characters around. Dragons breath etc only has about a 60 degree radius, so if you ensure your mages are wella way from your fighters and summons, you are less likely to have spells interrupted.

Finally, little things like bard songs make a huge difference in these type of battles.

Hope this helps. Once you master fighting dragons, you wont win every time but you might win 1-2 times in 3, which is a lot better than continually losing! They are challenging but that blue dragon scale is WELL worth the effort.

Good luck

There's an easy way to defeat both Abazigal and his son, both using the same strategy. You will need a high level thief with the spiked snare special ability. The following applies specifically to Abazigal:

Use a wizard eye to find the positions of pesky ice salamanders, then go around the outside and kill them so they don't get in the way later (and blunder into your precious traps). A summoned elemental prince or two will make short work of them (if you don't want to hack them to death personally).

Set two piles of traps; four spiked traps a short distance from the entrance, and three more off to one side (well away from the first four). Send in a hasted party member to initiate dialogue with Abazigal, then lead him to the set of three spiked snares. This will finish off his human incarnation (probably in a cloud of flesh chunks). Then run towards the cluster of four snares and Abazigal's dragon form will kill itself on those.

Try to set each snare group as a tight cluster. If the snares themselves are too far apart, the dragon may only set off a couple of them (with time to heal himself before tripping the others). All four have to go off simultaneously to kill a dragon outright. If the group of three is too close to the group of four, they might all be set off at once, leaving you with nothing left for the dragon form.
