So... Am I the only sad person watching this event. I'm not a huge fan of pop culture, in fact I loathe pop music in general but this show is so bad its good, if you get my drift.

I've been forced to watch it at my parents house on the basis that I'm apparently only keeping eye out for Russia's controversial trio, but I did like Austria's entry since it was the only one that featured a nice distorted guitar feel.

EDIT- Is it being shown live or do we down under have to suffer from yet another delayed telecast?

I saw about 15 minutes of it, and was unfortunate enough to catch the UK entry... nil points, I should think so too. Actually I wasn't sure whether it was a song contest or a blondes in skimpy clothing contest...!

I was going to go and watch it at my friend's place, she was having a Eurovision soiree this evening... but one of my friends from home sent me a text message telling me who won and how many points the UK got, thus totally ruining it. So I didn't bother. (So no, it's not live. And no Terry Wogan - bah. And no teletext subtitles to badly translate the song lyrics - bah again. )

BTW, a group of two people is generally referred to as a duo, not a trio. I heard that TaTU wanted to perform naked, but would have been disqualified for it... LOL Guess the lesbian publicity stunt must be wearing thing.

I always watch it coz it's so funny.

I thought the UK entry was crap, as usual, and there seemed to be a real emphasis throughout the show on scantily clad women rather than decent songs. Those pseudo wannabe lesbian-when-it-suits-us Russians sang very poorly indeed. Silly cows. Still managed to come third though.

However, I always keep an eye on Israel's entry. After the transsexual Dana International won a few years ago, they always liven up the proceedings!

Turkey won. Belly dancers. I'm sure you can imagine.

Come on, I like TaTu but their performance was absolutely crap.

It doesn't matter which song and contester you send in since countries vote on countries they like. That is the only reason Turkey won even though there were WAY better songs there. (Netherlands, Belgium, Greece ...)

Eurovision

I agree, Rob-hin but I suppose Turkey gave an entertaining performance too - it was quite imaginative.

But why do you like TaTu?! I find them embarrassingly bad and I think they've stooped rather low to get a hit record by courting all that sexual controversy. I think they are talentless.

It is the greatest blessing ever bestowed on the US. After the culture monkeys of Europe get through bashing our music, literature, drama, films, paintings, opera, sculpture, and general lack of class, all you need to do is say "Eurovision" for them all to fall to the floor, groaning in agony. In actual fact, Eurovision is a song contest among 20+ European (and a few other, such as Israel) nations thrown in. The song entries are almost invariably so bad they're laughable, and all of Europe votes on the final winner. ABBA won, once. What does that tell you?

The Eurovision Song Contest is a competition that's been going for a while - since the 1950s or 1960s, I'd say. The contest is hosted by the country that won it last year and it's notorious for being very hammy and camp with countries voting for each other to decide the winner. People like Abba, Cliff Richard, Celine Dion, etc have all been participants.

In recent years there have been all kinds of new entrants to the contest as borders in Europe have changed - like Bosnia, Croatia, Lativia, Estonia, etc. Now Israel are regular participants and I think Russia have just entered for the first time.

Sometimes the voting is really bizarre and the best song rarely ever wins. It's quite a laugh to watch!

Does anyone know how the national representative acts are chosen?

Britain is full of really good bands...why don't we just get someone decent to do it for a change?

Maybe I felt a tad supportive for the Austrian act, sure beat the neon clothing and sliver boots worn by the other contestants though. I was on the verge of getting a headache from all the reflective gear, so I turned it off halfway...

I saw a bit of it (thats enough). I fail to see how the UK stood out as rubbish amongst that company. How could anyone stand out, even the russians were bad and they are well known.

This was a eurovision shock , did europe really think the UK was that bad...Is there is more to this poor result from UK. Could the rejecting of the euro and Iraq stance have swayed votes?

Then got 0 votes . I think they should have played the Celtic team song...at least they would get votes from Portugal.

maybe the UK should have declared themselves a neutral country for the contest, europe would have voted for that.

It shows what is important doesn't it, the song doesn't matter.
Just look at that strange guy from IIRC Norway? He looked like he just walked out of Sesamestreet! Still he fiished 6th or so...


Well, I've only heard 2 of Tatu's songs (in english) and they were ok... but not great.
But their performance was really bad.


Eurovision rules sucks!
I don't really care, but some countries are automaticly in the finals while others have to qualify if you don't end high enough.
That is really bumb because countries that did get enough points have to re-qualify because of this.
And I think it's all political. Come on, tourisme in Turkey is dead due to the war, and now they happen to win the Eurovision.

Apparantly you can't enter if you already have a name for yourself. The BBC has televised the competition to select the UK entrant in previous years. If there was something on this year, I missed it, (thank God).

Several acts have gone on to make a name for themselves after having enterred, of course, irrelevant of how they did in the scoring.
