any fire damage gives you a bonus.

to elucidate on what keeB said, the fastest way to kill them is with fire damage - the rule with the ochre jellies is that if you don't kill them fast enough (e.g. only manage incremental damage) they will just keep splitting until they overwhelm you.
fire area effect spells are the most useful here, (in non-HoF: fireball and flame strike - in HoF meteor swarm and fire storm). i've experimented with shroud of flame, but that only seems to exacerbate the problem (since it doesn't do enough damage).
to use these effectively, you have to take advantage of the jellies' speed (or lack of it) you can run around them until they are all clustered together and then unleash your fire spell for maximum efficiency - remember to conserve your spells as there will be a second wave after you have killed the original three jellies (not inclusive of their splits).
if you have a high evasion character, you can use them to decoy the jellies and then target the area around that character if you don't like running around very much.
i've also managed to beat them with a no cleric no wizard party in normal mode with my two character party by stocking up on an immense amount of flaming oils from the wandering village.
as a rule, i do not attack them with conventional weapons as this method does not kill them fast enough - while you may get away with this somewhat in normal mode, this is simply impossible in heart of fury - even with Pudu's Fiery Blight and the Battleaxe of Burning. instead, use your characters to maneuver the jellies to your liking and pile on the flaming goodness.
of course, there is the option of forgoing the river monster quest altogether and just running past them and grabbing the key - but this is not very exciting and should be used only when you really have no choice (i.e. you don't have any flame spellcasters and you forgot to buy oils)
hope this helps - the jellies ARE one of the more annoying parts of the game.
