You cannot control more than 5 monsters at any given time

I seem to have a little problem. Whenever I try to summon something I get the message stating that I cannot control more monsters, but I have none! I haven't had any for some time. I'm pretty sure the last ones I summened died a horribel death. I tried to sleep and to restart the game, but still the same. And I could really need some beasties to take of the heat from all those fire giants.

Has anybody encountered the same problem and solved it?

If they were imprisoned, they still count as living regarding to the limit. Try casting freedom on the spot you were at last able to summon.

What do you mean, you're "pretty sure they died a horrible death?" Does this mean you're certain, or that you think they died? And if the latter, did this occur in the same area where your party currently is? If so, try leaving and returning. Your summoned creatures invariably cease to exist when you move on.

The last monsters I summoned was 3 lions and they died, but I belive I had a deva imprissoned not that long ago, but she should still just count as one so I should be able to cast new ones.
And I tried walking around to 5 different areas and it dosn't help. The worst thing is that I have the same problem in 3 out of my 4 savegames. Tha only savegame not affected was the one where I was still in Saradush so now I have to do 3 areas over again.

@Camilla, yes this happened to me also. Have you tried resting for a few nights in a row in one inn, then deleting the files in your cache/data folder? :)

I've rested, but not deleted any files. If you're sure that wont harm anything I'll try it when I get home. Thanx!

What's the cache/data folder for?

Camilla, there is no guarantee that it will solve your problem, but it won't do any damage to your game, and is often advised as the first port of call if a game becomes buggy.

The cache/data folder contains temporary files created during gameplay which can be safely removed. Remember, only delete the content of the cache/data folder, and not the folder itself :)

The more common cause of this problem

I just recently encountered this problem while playing my solo cleric/mage. I move my skeletons from one area to the next by packing them in the door and turning undead. Although you can't tell them to use a door, you can scare them through it. At first I thought this was the cause of my problem but it is not.

When you are transported from one area to another by a quest (the hud goes away and you get some dialog), sometimes your summons are not destroyed. Not every summon that is left in stasis this way counts towards your limit, but for some reason some of them do.

To solve this I busted out the CLUAConsole and used the MoveToArea debug command to find all of my stasis'd beasties and let them unsummon or killed them. If your problem isn't imprisoned monsters or cache files, this aught to do the trick!

Good luck and happy hunting!

You could try this and see if it helps: Pocket Plane Group - Bending Baldur's Gate 2 and the Infinity Engine

Install the summoning cap removal component in Ding0Tweak.

There are other ways around the max 5 monster-thing with for example Simulacrum/PI, then you can have as many devas/planetars as you want. Though a little cheesy.
