funny import

I finished BG1 with my druid. I copied the 'Char1' file into the 'Character' map in BG2 so I could continue the series with the same pc. The strange thing is, when I choose the import option while starting a new game, the game goes straight to the skills section. IIRC I should be able to pick a kit first, but I can't.
Did I forget something obvious? Help would be appreciated since I REALLY don't want to play through SoA and ToB with a vanilla druid...
I could probably solve this by using Shadowkeeper or something but I don't want to if I don't have to.

Try importing your Druid from a BG1 saved game instead of from a character file. Maybe that will help. Good luck.

I already did that... same non-result. Thanks anyway.

I've found that importing characters from BG1 is extremely buggy and it often screws up the characters hps, etc. Instead, just copy down all the characters stats from the final save of BG1 and then when you start BG2 create the character over again. Hopefully you can roll stats that can be adjusted to match the old ones, if not use SK for minor adjustments and to add back the golden pantaloons. I did this in my current game with a fighter. Every time I brought him into BG2 his hps got all hosed up and he lost a good chunk of exp points as well. You can import the character's portrait files also if you want to continue to use the same ones. I did this with my main char as well as Kagain and Yeslick.

Funny, I did the same with my Paladin file, and the health and stats stayed completely the same from when I beat BG1.
Which version of Baldur's Gate do you have, Coot? Do you have the normal version w/ TotSC, or do you have the Original Saga version?

I remember reading about import problem, Uncle S. I'll just have to use SK to hack my char back to normal.
Galuf, I guess you were just plain lucky this time with your paladin.
I never had this problem before either.
I'm using the normal version of the game with TotSC and I've downloaded DSotSC.

No fair! Sk won't let me pick a kit! The kit-section is all greyed out.
This happened when I opened a saved game. When I tried to open a chr.file I got an error-message: 'Unable to open that file. Error (2004): bad CHR version. SK expects version 2.0'
Version 2.0? What does that mean? Does it have to do with DSotSC? Because I think DSotSC changes the version of the game.
I'm doomed. I'm stuck with a vanilla druid. My worst fear has come to pass.

This might be a silly question, but is your druid single class? is that what you mean by vanilla?
I took a druid all the way through BG and ToSC and was still able to import her and choose a kit...

Yes, he's a single class druid. That's why I should be able to pick a kit. This is my 6th run through the series and I've always been able to.

I think you will have to follow UncleScratchy's earlier suggestion and recreate the character in SK from a new BG2 character.

Maybe the answer is more simple than you think. It could be that you are importing your character AND creating a new one.... it is unlikely that the game will let you do both.
I don't believe that there were any kits in BG1... so you can do a new character with a kit OR you can import your old character.... I don't think that's a bug...

Well, my Paladin was able to choose a kit when I imported him into BG2, so I made him into a Cavalier. I'm getting the feeling that something's up.

You can indeed always choose a kit when you import a character from BG1 (but not every kit, for example you cant import a Lawful Good fighter and choose Berserker as kit, since Berserkers can not be of Lawful alignment).

Well, yeah I knew that. It's just that I couldn't totally see why Coot couldn't be able to access a druid kit unless it was a bug.

Actually you can cheat BG2 if you import a Druid with >16 str/>16 con from BG1:
you can choose the Avenger kit without suffering the penaleties to str and con.
So it really seems to be a bug in Coot's game, although I never heard about that kind of problem...

Your XP gets set back to level 7 or 8 or so (not sure, plus it depends on whether it was a TotSC character or not), meaning your level drops back, meaning your hit points drop back.

Yes, they made it so that your char (and consequently, the npc's) wouldn't be too powerful. With the xp you can get with TotSC the game would be too easy with a lvl 11 fighter.

TotSC had an Exp-Cap of 161000. If you import a character from TotSC he'll still have 161000 XP, BG2 won't reduce him to 89000 Exp (BG1 Exp-Cap).

You're right, no doubt. However, I remember playing BG1, TotSC and DSotSC and when I imported my char in BG2 there was a reduction in level and experience... and rightly so. My mage had become so powerful he could've taken out Firkaag, right of the bat, with his arms tied behind his gnomish back.

An illusionist, I presume? Baerevan (sp?) bless them for that extra INT in BG (1 & 2).
My Paladin would probably be good company for him, as would my Bard that's in the works in BG1.
Then, I'm hoping to take a Dwarf through the game. Either a Fighter to become a Berserker, a Fighter/Cleric, or a vanilla Cleric to become a Priest of Lathander. I guess I'm too good for my own... well, I dunno, evil?
