......I am having a large amount of trouble figuring out how I should create my character. I'm leaning towards a firearm/melee technologist, but by looking at the amount of options/amount of CP's I'll be getting, I fear I'm going to be too spread out. Could anyone walk me through how I should create the character? And what background is best? And when I'm starting out should I put a CP in a schematic? Or just save them for attributes with one skill?

I suggest a magicuser for your first run-through. This will save you no end of endless grubbing through countryside and dumpsters to find objects, and the inventory system is terrible.

But any character will do; you can't go wrong, as long as you concentrate your areas of expertise. Try here for several FAQ/walkthroughs, if you need some direction. I honestly don't think one is better than another.

Suggestion, though: put a point into Persuasion. It helps a lot.

Thanks for the tips. I'd already started a character which was a half-orc melee/gunslinger with the Bandit background. I was doing relatively well, but after reading your post and a couple of the FAQ's I'll save the techie for the next round through.

Also after playing your new character you should try "roleplaying" the game. not the what would i do in this situation and all that but chose a class and take skills and backgrounds acordingly. i have great fun with tieves. dodge, meele, backstab, pickpocket, prowling, spot trap, pick locks and disarm traps. 20 dex and 20 perception. he will be tech (annoying) but
he can kill almost anything I have encountered so far. I sugest halfling with the raised by monks option. you only need to buy a dagger with the first shopkeeper. you should try it out after you have played with your current character

Thanks for the help.

I actually started another new game  with a Half-Ogre Warrior with the "Ran Away with Circus" background. He hits everything so he levels up quickly. He's already level 26 :D . Yep, It's kind of power gamer-like, especially now that he has 22 ST and 20 DEX (lowest stats are willpower, beauty and perception since I needed to beef up INT for the Axe Schematics) plus the Pyro Technic Axe. But I've been roleplaying as much as possible. He just bashes doors down FBI style and has no mercy. He eliminated the thieves guild (Thaddeus and Mr. Black) for getting mouthy. He eliminated both gangs in The Boil because he didn't enter the tavern to talk to anyone and demanded an audience from the Pollocks and the other ones. I had a lot of trouble with Garrick the Stout though...had to reload a lot :D (But I didn't have the pyro Technic Axe then :D )

Just as a question...how do you get city locations? I hear all sorts of things about Caladon and I have a quest in Stillwater but I can't seem to get the locations from anyone. Who do I have to ask? Are there maps of Arcanum in Tarant?

You talk to folks. You also take the railroad, which will move you to new destinations.

you should just explore to get map locations. there are maps on the internet if you REALLY cant find that place with the incredible rewarding quest or the master of meele or dodge (garrick stout and Adkin Chambers) or take some more quests. most people giv you a map locatio when they give you a quest

Actually, you can teleport back to the Isle of Despair, provided that you have been to another location on it other than the camp itself. There's a shield around the camp, but not the other locations - so you could teleport to the other location and then walk back to the camp.

Yep, I have tried it - although it was a long time ago when I played - but I'm sure that it works.
