Problem file on CD2 (Possible Spoilers)

Post by The Barrister »

My game was freezing about half way through loading every time I tried to enter the Government District to pursue the Chapter 2 quests. On consulting various message boards, I decided to copy the CD contents to my hard drive. I was able to copy all the files except Area1000.pif in CD2\Data folder. About half the file copies before it stops and sends the message "Cannot copy AREA1000: The system cannot read from the specified device". I've cleaned the disc, tried an MS-DOS copy, and a Norton Utilities DiskEdit copy, all to no avail. I'm impatient to continue the game and complete Chapter 2. Will I be able to rescue Nalia, meet Madeen, and commission Sir Saarles from Chapter 3 or later? What else might I miss?

You can't enter Gov District, eh? Bad, you'll lose Vic and Jan, can't buy a license, lose the Valygar quest...maybe the CD has scratches?

There is a good bit you could miss, but I don't think any of it has to be finished before you start chapter 3. The safe thing to do is save your game in another slot and don't overwrite it till this is figured out.

If anybody knows if these quest are on a timer please post.

If it does, they are invisible to the naked eye. Thanks for responding.

I've had problems with my CD2 as well, but not as severe. There have been occasions when the game will lock up while changing map areas, and I end up having to restart the computer.

Oddly, this problem with CD2 has also prevented me from doing a full install on my computer, as the disk simply sits there spinning, with no data being read beyond a specific file. It does the same thing on our other computer, so I ended up purchasing another (non-Collector's Edition) copy of the game, which has performed fine. Works out okay, because now my husband and I can play the game at the same time -- no fighting over disks! ;-)
