The Mighty Gruntboy

I think some of you may know that Gruntboy has parted company with GameBanshee and won't be posting here anymore.

It seems to me he was an extremely popular SYMian and an integral part of these forums. Please use this thread to wish him goodbye and goodluck and give him the decent send-off he deserves.

So, GameBanshee, raise your glasses and let's sing a chorus of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and drink a toast to the Mighty Gruntboy! Hurrah! May God bless him and all who sail in him.

This thread makes me sad, it's almost like reading the obituary column! :(

@Gruntboy, fare thee well oh legend of SYM *hug*

*raises glass*

Agreed, Yshania but I also didn't want there NOT to be such a thread, if you see what I mean.

Let's make him smile! He's is legendary.

Alas! The Gruntboy is dead - long live the Gruntboy!!

I was just about to create a topic called "Whither SYM?" on a similar note. IMO, Gruntboy was an integral part of SYM, and I don't think it will be the same without him. :( :( For my part, SYM is starting to feel much less like what I encountered back in early '01 when I first signed on, and I don't like the way it is going.

I don't think I'll be posting here much anymore. :(

@Gruntboy: You're a good man, Gruntboy, and you were an honor to Gamebanshee. It is not the same without you.

Goodby Gruntboy.

@Enchantress, I understand, but I am with dM here. Things are changing around SYM.

@Grunt, you realise Waverly could have a field day now? But I am sure he will become bored soon enough without your witty retorts ;)

Yes, things do appear to have changed. Even Waverly's not around anymore!

One less comrade in arms to fend off all you hippies (kidding of course, bout the hippies business)

Well Grunt I hope if you see this, or if someone relates it to you (*cough*enchantress*), there should be another form of contact between those who will miss your posts. Which I would consider myself one of.

*Stands up and in a very very very very very slightly non straight manner Thug begins to sway to a picture of gruntboy*

Yeah, he'll see the thread whilst lurking, maybe. Otherwise, I'll relate it's contents to him, don't you worry.

I'll PM you, Littiz, with the details. I don't want to post them here.

Somehow I feel as though I'm being thought of as the enemy, so I think it's time to explain myself. Gruntboy received a serious warning from me a couple of months ago after which he promised not to lose his temper again. Additionally, I was told earlier this weekend that if I allowed members such as Gruntboy to continue slinging insults that certain members would leave the forum. Either way, the forum loses.

Gruntboy received a warning, and blatantly went far beyond breaking the rules by posting profanity and purposely avoiding the filter to do so. I know many of you have emailed/PMed me to say that this type of behavior has happened in the past without someone being banned, but please keep in mind that I don't read 99% of what gets posted here in the forums. Not because I don't want to, but because my time is extremely limited. I have a fulltime job (aside from GB), I'm finishing the basement in my house, I have a dog and girlfriend that need attention, and I have an entire network of RPGs to maintain (as well as up and coming projects) - all of which I do pretty much by myself. Therefore, I can only address what gets complained about, and this incident caused many emails to flood my inbox.

Although some of you may feel that I'm being unfair, I can only address what's brought to my attention. If other people are breaking the rules that I don't know about, please let me know. I don't enjoy banning anyone, especially someone who has helped moderate these forums for the last year or two.

So, what is the answer to future issues like this? Should I keep my nose out of the forums completely, and leave the reprimanding to the moderators? Should a person receive numerous warnings before they're banned? Should we let things slide completely and allow insults and profanity to be posted?

Speak your mind! Let me know what you'd like to me to do in order to avoid conflict yet give members the freedom to say what they want.

Buck, I understand your reasons and I'm sorry if I've caused you to feel villainous.

This thread is entirely genuine and it's just for people to show Gruntboy that they'll miss him, that's all.

Please, chaps, let's not argue about anything and get the thread closed. Let's just celebrate Gruntboy.

I am the last one to speak up for grunt, because we have never seen eye to eye and we have had many problems in the past. But i will be the first person to say that it was too harsh. He was warned once correct? And then he insults and get banned.

Looking at pervious banning cases, i think SS got 3 warnings. AR the same or even more. Neko around 3 as well. I personally feel that he should get one more chance based purely on consistancy and a proper procedure. If he breaks it again ban him. However there should be some consistancy with regard to the way people are banned.

2 warnings. A short ban period and then after that a permanent ban if they break the rules again.

Though i feel moderates should hold themselves to hire standards and never break the rules as they represent the website. Buck it is your choice really.

Well I think its time for me to show my PoV...

Gruntboy was a contravercial poster. I had no real beef with him, but I know of far too many members who did. I will mention no names. I respect the man, but he posted far too often with his emotion, I have done that, and ended up 12ft under. It doesnt surprise me that he has had several warnings. And through private conversations with un-named members, those warnings are well suited. Im not happy with his banning, but I dont oppose it.

And thats MY side of the story.

It is Buck's choice and it's his website. To be honest, there are worse things than swearing, in my opinion. But that's just my opinion.

Thanx @Ench!
I still don't know what really happened, but still I hope things can be undone.
For me, I've never seen any of the debate here, even the most heated, as something to be worried about.
I've always had the sensation that people felt to talk with friends.

I've always admired Grunt (for what I know of him), his posts have always been strong, direct and courageous.
Surely a honourable man.

Well i disagree with the swearing part. You and i discussed that before. Though i will say one thing, Grunt did do something wrong, and he should have been warned for that. Losing his modship is fine with me. In my eyes he did do something wrong. But banning is too harsh just for those 2 words.
