You roll an 8 sided die once. So basically it's 1-8 damage. Whenever there's an "xDy" y=amount of sides on the die, and x=how many of them you roll. Pretty simple. Good luck.

It means 1 roll of an 8 sided die, which determines how much damage you do with that weapon. Likewise, 2d6 would be 2 rolls of 6 sided die. Factors such as character strength and specialization affect how much damage you do also.

An easy way to see what does the most damage is to calculate the avarage damage.

For example:
Longsword+1
1d8+1 damage
Minimum = 2 (1+1)
Maximum = 9 (8+1)
Avarage = 5.5 ((9+2)/2)

Bastardsword +1
2d4 +1
Minimum = 3 (2 dices so the minumum on both is 1 together that makes 2, and offcourse the +1 enchantment)
maximum = 9
avarage = (9+3)/2 = 6

So if you are proficient in both, the bastardsword does more damage
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.
