The stat points at character creation are random, as if you had rolled 3 six-sided die for each stat. The maximum you can roll is 18 for each stat but GOOD LUCK doing that. Just keep retrying til you get a high number of points to allocate. :D

A CHR 3? Man, what an ugly and disfunctional mage ;) I understand the desire for an uber character and its your game and all, but rather than aim for "perfect" high numbers, I'd say aim for numbers that an actual (maybe heroic) person might have and roleplay him/her. It will be much more rewarding, and it seems to me to be to be easier to get into character with some honest stats.

This is why we have such broad rules of character creation, @Hesperus: to allow all types of players to enjoy themselves. ;) Logically, no character in a party would have a charisma below, well, 8 or so; anything lower would look like Charles Laughton in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. For either sex.

And what about a character (such as a mage, or fighter) with a Wisdom of 3? They'd be unable to do more than huddle in the corner of a room and drool. Or a cleric with an intelligence of 3? No knowledge of how to read or write, no ability to communicate in any language known to humanity--or any other species.

Yet many players regularly customize their characters in AD&D games accordingly, because they don't get into roleplaying on that level. In fact, many view RPGs as strategy games with a large random element thrown in. They like this. Based on what you posted above, you would probably find such an approach limiting. I know I would. But that's their choice.

And others just want to maximize certain values, then throw their stats the window so they can roleplay minus the numbers. Their choice, too. Dei gustibus.

hmmmmmmm????

The odds of actually rolling FOUR EIGHTEENs are astronomical!!

You should be playing craps in Vegas instead of BG@....

I believe 80+ is considered 'good'. One of my characters has roughly 87 total, he's a ranger with something like 18/93 strength, 17 dex, 16 con, 15 wis, 11 int, 11 cha. He wasn't group leader, so charisma didn't matter much, and I could always find the ring of human influence if I really wanted to.

With some re-rolls you should have little problem getting the 85-90ish rolls.

I usually rerolls untill getting close to 90s because your character is a "hero" and a son of a god after all - not a "joe-farmer" :D

Well, if "perfect" stats is your aim, just enable the cheat mode, and press CTRL-8 while rolling stats.
You'll get 18 (or 18/00) in all stats, in no time.

My advice would be to play differently, but...

I once rolled 7 straight 0's on a 10 sided die. And it didn't even count for anything, I was just bored while playing D&D w/ some friend cuz the DM went to the bathroom. I do have witnesses though....
