New to game, need advice

Hello, I just got this game today.
So far I'm enjoying it, I'm sonmewhere in Chapter 1 now. Though I will need some advice since I'm not too familiar with the mechanics of the D&D system.
Here's a question, what do you do with gems like gemstone, malachite, etc. Do you just sell them all will they have some secret to them?
Another question, I started out as a fighter and multi-classed into a sorceror. Why can't I select any of the sorceror's spells?
Also, is there some easy way to train your character,(Like in Morrowind, you find creatures and pratice skills on them)
Which, in your opinion is the best class. I think I will try Cleric because I read a lot about them in a guide.
Thanks in advance!

Well firstly:
regarding gems; there really is only one gemstone you need to be aware of and that is diamonds. They can be used for crafting weapons (check the sticky thread regarding items)
The rest can be sold.
The fighter/sorcerer.
Well firstly - what is your charisma score?
A sorcerer uses charisma to base his abilities on - this is implemented that you need 10+ the spell level of the spell - thus 11 to cast level 1 spells and 12 for level 2 etc up to 19 for level 9 spells.
If you have the sufficient charisma score, then we need to know more about your problem: "can't choose" how?
can't cast spells?
can't select spells at level up?
or ....?
Lastly:
Kill stuff and complete quests.
That is the way you level in NwN and earn exp. It is nothing like Morrowind where you need to cast destruction spells to gain in destruction ability.
Hope this helps.

Thanks! Regarding the can't choose problem, I can't select spells when I level up. What's wrong?

I think that reason is because you choose a fighter level when leveling and not a sorcerer level?
Could this be it?

Ehhh - instead of going to all that trouble - then why not simply enter debugmode and give your self the exp?

Well - entering console and using DM commands in the game might be considered a cheat.
But compared to making a module simply to gain fast exp, well .... I'd say it is more timeffective and result/action is the same
.
For instance, I usually don't really bother playing the Prelude anymore ( it annoys me
) so then I start chapter 1, and gives myself the 2 "free" levels you would have gotten in the prelude.
Cheating? maybe the means is, but the result is the same levelwise as playing the prelude.

Great tip! It annoys me when I want to play a new character and have to go through the prelude just to get those two points.

In the NWN manual, page 164 under Tips and Tricks (which is a section of "Building Your Own Adventure" it says:
"Experience Points: NWN rewards about 10% of the suggested experience points from the D&D rules .... under the Module Properties, you can adjust this percentage reward (up or down)."
I just want to be sure we're understanding something, please. I was hoping that this was telling me that we can adjust something when playing the 'already made' game, but I'm afraid that it only works if we 'build our own.' Am I right? Is there any way to raise one's experience points in the 'as is' game?
I'm trying to convince my son to use more magic and goodies versus hack and slash, but he says that the things I think of are only if we are a higher level. So ... I'm, well, ummm, trying to remedy that!
Thanks, as usual!

You can do this for the official campaign (OC) also - but it requiers you to open them in the tool set and save them as a "new" module, your own module, where you have altered the XP-slider.
