Is there a way to detect if I've attracted disease without people telling me?

cast a cure disease spell and hope you have one

Right click on your screen to bring up the inventory/stats/magic boxes. at the top of the magic menu will be a line of small icons..run the mouse over them to see any diseases/resistances/ability or skill fortifications, bad effects are usually in red.

At the same time check the colour of the numbers for your Attributes:
yellow - normal strength
white - enchanted in some way; remove enchantment items to see normal (or reduced)
red - reduced by disease, enchantment, etc. Red does not show if positively enchanted (see white)
