Some help plz.(Fighting Vamps and choosing a permanent party)
In Atkathla, no matter where I go, I keep running into a guy who's under attack from 2 vampires and a female (forgot her name). How the hell do I kill 'em? I can't even seem to scratch em. I run into them if I go to the city gates, if I go to the bridge,... Should I just let them kill the guy?

Well, there are lots of fun ways to kill vampires, but first things first... what do you have in your party?

@Incertainty, welcome to the GB BG2 forum. Hope you enjoy your stay.
A couple of ideas to make it more profitable to you: 1) When you create a thread title, give some basic idea of the information you need. "Help!" is the kind of title that will probably be ignored by many posters, who are looking specifically for threads of interest. 2) If you're going to post a thread that will contain possible spoilers, please put that info in the thread title, as many others do. Thanks.
Onto your question. Possible spoilers follow...

First off, if you want to avoid the vampire encounters (and for many first time players, that's a good idea while their party members are still inexperienced), don't go out at night. Just rest until daylight returns. Very little has to be done at night.
Second, if you still want to confront the vampires, make sure you have a cleric and mage in your party. (This is advice for a novice. I am not intending it for all my fellow BG2 addicts who will scream, "Aw, you can take 'em all on with just a a fighter who has one leg tight behind his waist and both eyes closed!"

) Clerics have a few good spells that target the undead, while mages have general, all-purpose death-and-destruction spells that do the same.
Of course, make sure you have a magic license, first. If you don't, you'll be dealing with the Cowled Wizards, as well as vampires.
Third, you should receive dialog options that let you opt out of any account, if you so choose. Personally, I usually opted out, because my party was usually on the way to something more important. I don't like wasting spells and losing health right at the start of an adventure, in some brief, unimportant side encounter. But each to their own.

my party consists of me (lvl 10 sorc), Minsc, Jan, Jaheira, Yoshimo, and Viconia (all lvl 7-9). I am more than aware of some decent spells to deal with the undead like False Dawn, I currently don't have access to them though, the most I can manage is Repulse Undead and Negative plane protection. For the moment my largest concern is just getting the NPC's I want in my 'permanent party' asap. That would be Imoen (good luck...) , Jaheira, Minsc, Viconia and a decent fighter (Korgan perhaps, he's evil though, and Keldorn is said not to work with Viconia...)

If your characters are telling you, "My weapon has no effect," or words to that effect, then your weapons aren't powerful enough to hit the vampires. I think you need +2 or +3 weapons to hit them. Vampires are also immune or resistant to some kinds of damage and some kinds of magic such as Stun, Hold, etc. I think that fire will always hurt them. Flame Arrow, Fireball, and Flamestrike come to mind.
As an alternative, you could side with the vampires instead of the Shadow Thieves, you know. Just thought I'd mention that.
SPOILER
Of course, even if the vampires are reduced to zero hit points (and you get experience for defeating them), you can't permanently destroy them unless you attack them in their own lair with a special...device. (Think of traditional vampire lore like you see in the movies.) If you defeat them on the streets, they will polymorph into a gas cloud (which you can't damage) and retreat to their lair. Don't bother chasing them.

Ok, thanks. I'm starting over though. The sorcerer isn't working out as well as I'd planned.

When I go out during the night in the city, I usually keep my cleric on Turn Undead. Even low level Turn Undead helps.
