You probably haven't got enough in the Set Traps skill. The more the better.

Specifically, when you level him up you have 20 points to place in various thieving skills. In order to place these points in the Set Traps skill, you need to scroll down. This will reveal the Set Traps skill and the Detect Illusion skill.
These two skills are new to BG2 and are frequently missed. I played nearly the whole way through without figuring this out.

also collect potions of dexterity (blue) and master thievery....
if you need traps to kill off a nasty enemy, and your trap setting skills are too low yet, use potions to enhance trapsetting for a short while..

I don't believe potions will affect the Set Traps ability. Only the Mercykiller Ring (from the Bonus Merchant, Deirdre) will affect this ability.
But your advice can still work: I usually max out the Set Traps ability and then use potions to cover the other abilities that I neglected.
