Minsk and Boo?

I've never played BG1 and I wanted to know if Minsk was 'crazy' in the first one or is he normal until his witch died? Minsk and Boo Rule!

Well, Minsk was already with Boo, the giant miniature space hamster in BG1. That's as normal as he gets!

He is "eccentric" already in BG1.
Although he IS separated from his witch when he is first encountered in BG1, but I doubt it has nothing to do with his "condition". Guess he was born that way... (kinda like John Malkovich in a movie: Of Mise And Men)

Actually, if you talk to Dynaheir when you rescue her, and ask how she got into all of this, she'll tell you that Minsc was not wearing a helmet, and was knocked unconcious by a gnoll giving him a nasty strike to the head. Poor Minsc.
Still, despite how he may seem, Minsc has one thing straight: he wishes to be a hero and help benefit the lives of innocents, right Boo?

Ah, OK that explains it.
Just noticed another reference to that. When you'll meet Melicamp the talking chicken, one of the dialog options is: "I fear I have taken one too many blows to the head. Next I'll be hearing hamsters speak."

Minsc is not crazy, nor is he stupid. He is brain-damaged (as the result of MANY blows to the head). His brain still works, but his thoughts come to him in, shall we say, unusual ways--namely, through Boo, who is in fact not an ordinary hamster. That, among other things (such as their mutual desire to vanquish evil), creates a very special bond between them.

Yes, definitely. I always seem to enjoy having Minsc in my party for some reason, as well as the other guys you're generally percieved to be accompanied by plot-wise (as in who you end up being around at the start of BG2). His Strength makes him a good tank (though I definitely wish he at least had higher Con, and at the most, a point higher in Dex along with that). Still, he's managable, fun to listen to (kudos to Jim Cummings), etc.
I wouldn't have said that any other way.

Minsc is one of the really cool characters in the game. I want to keep him but I will need a mage eventually. I may have to drop J and K and get Xan and then maybe get Ajantis. I have Branwen (sp), Jaheira, Khalid, Misnc, Imoen and myself (Paladin). I'll see what I want to do when the time comes.

Kryton, you'd better get Dynaheir soon if you have Minsc in your party. And she fills the mage slot.
If you don't want her, just dual class Imoen.

Excellent advice. Note, too, that not everybody in the lands is pleased with Dynaheir. Some of your best friends may object.

We rescued her, Minsc was happy and there was much rejoicing. I didn't want to keep her so when I went into the Nashkel mines I got Xan and let Minsc go. We are all 2nd level. I didn't want to duel Imoen. SHe's a good thief.

Normally if I want Minsc and not his witch, I just let her die in a battle and don't bother bringing her back, then remove her from the party. That still fits in with BG2 for continuity (sort of)
As for Imoen, she's my favourite thief in the game but I tend level her up in line with her stats for BG2 and if you dual her at level 7 then it doesn't take long for her to get her thieving abilities back (I usually just pick up another thief short term while waiting for that to happen - my current game I just dualled SharTeel to a thief when I dualled Imoen to a mage

)

Great advice. I do this too (I feel that Minsc is a very powerful NPC, while I can't stand Dynaheir).

I do the same thing, except I usually use Coran as my Thief while Imoen is learning to be a Wizard. I disagree with you though... in BG1, 8 Wizard levels takes F O R E V E R to attain.

That description fits Boo pretty well: A companionable, combat ready, dwarf-variant giant space hamster. Yes, I do believe Boo is the genuine article and that Minsc is merely eccentric in presentation, but not off his rocker.

Just curious
Does any1 else find it curious that Minsc is a Ranger instead of a "boot to butt kicking" fighter?

Well he doesn't have enough WIS to be a Ranger, but apart from that, not really.

I have query about the big guy too, I can't him to talk to me! He's standing in the centre of town, but when I click to engage conversation nothing happens, the sound triggers, but no text appears! Is this a bug, or is there a reason he won't talk to us? We're a good party with a high reputation, there is room in the party for him too. What gives?

Well the grumpy git still won't talk to us. Sod him.
