When you fight with NPC

There are a few quests you are to go to X to meet and support so-and-so to kill someone. My problem is the NPC dies too easily. They rush to enemies, stand between me and enemies, and next thing I know is I'm looking at their dead body.
I'm currently try to kill a necromancer and her companions in the North. I came across a bonelord and two dremoras together in a hallway, and my companion of the day, though brave she was, died every time I tried, while I managed to survive with a few scratches and messed up hairstyle.
Any advice? Thanks in advance.

You didn't say, but I'm guessing you're trying to help a buoyant armiger kill a necromancer in Vas. The best way to handle this one is to go in without her and clear out the undead and daedra ahead of time (do NOT dispose of the corpses), then go get her and kill the necromancer.

I just finished this quest yesterday. I got suspicious that I missed some of Percius Mercius' dialog and the quest wasn't 'official' yet because Vas wasn't marked on my map. Sure enough I got there and the gal wasn't there to meet me. So I went in and wiped out everyone, including the mage, anyway. I went back to Percius got the final bit of dialog and returned. The gal was there and as soon as I initiated dialog with her the quest was considered complete and I got credit for the job. I did not rest or dispose of any corpses until it was done. So you really don't even need to let the NPC go in with you and kill anyone to get this to work.

There is a similar problem when escorting someone. As soon as a creature moves in to attack you, they move to defend you. They may or may not be effective, but you cannot attack with anything enchanted for fear of injuring/killing them in the process. Again, go on ahead and clear the path before continuing the escort.

Thanks, guys.
Unfortunately, I've already had her with me and there's no "wait here" option available (you have the option when you take NPC from A to B). So, I had to struggle a few more times before I managed to finish the quest. (yup, it was Vas)
I noticed all the enemy attack whoever they see first, so I ran to them (after all, I know where they were

), keeping their attention to myself. I had self-made potions of "restore health" (heal 23 pts for 121 seconds or something), used a weapon with "absorb health" enchant, and had "heal companion" spell handy to make sure she won't get killed.
I hope the game allow me to check the health status (and if they were poisoned/infected with disease), so that I can act swiftly.

For me the secret to escorting anyone (pilgrims, merchants, runaway slaves, etc) is having a good bow and being able to use it effectively (high marksmanship skill). That way I can pick off cliff racers before they attack and kill other beasties from a distance, often with one shot, before my NPC can rush into the attack. Just be sure to use non-enchanted arrows in case the NPC gets into the fray. Its also helpful to have high endurance and speed so you can run ahead of the NPC and check for ambushes.
On the couple of fighters guild quests where the NPC is waiting for you I just go in and clean out everything then go outside and speak to the NPC. I used to leave the target alive but as I previously posted I've found that that isn't necessary as long as you don't mess with the bodies.

at least one of the faqs mention the benefits of a RANGED heal spell...
make a ring or amulet with a powerful ranged heal spell, with a high charge...heal companion is a must for anyone who plays the main quest, at least two tasks require the spell, but a ranged magic version will make it much much easier...and a good bow is mandatory...
btw...if you use summons a lot, the faq noted that summoning a saint, or atronach in a fight, and levitating and healing your summons on a regular basis will allow you to make some rather difficult fights easy....
