curious lightsaber issue

When one uses a lightsaber in any star wars game and the movies it reacts just like a sword with another lightsaber. I was thinking about that and it occured to me that it should go directly through the beam. "The only weight is in the hilt" It's like a laser-the beam is imaginary and creates heat-or something to that extent. Therefore one would think that the lightsaber would be impossible to fight with because there is simply nothing in the beam.

I think this is one of those times that suspension of disbelief comes in. ;)

They try to explain why swords don't just get cut in half with 'cortosis weave', but it's kind of weak since every melee item in the game has it.

Mr. Philosophy, while you're on the topic, we can debate the existence of the Force, laser beams, and even-space travel.
In Sci-fi, you gotta believe 100% or 0%.
