Final Battle (Spoilers?)

I've got a question about the final battle. This is my first time through the game.
So, all these demons appear with Irenicus. I cast Prot from Evil on the entire party, however it doesn't seem to stop them from all out wailing on me. Do I need multiple spells going (do they stack?) In the past, I never had any problem with demons once I cast the Prot from Evil spell.
Help?
Also, since I'm posting, I've got a character generation question. I don't have a book for the game, and I haven't seen an answer/posting for this question. I'm going to start a new game soon and I want to do an Archer/Mage. Is this a possible combination?
Thanks.

I believe the demons attack you no matter what. Even if you have prot. from evil cast on yourself and Irenicus hasnt.
If the demons keep wailing on you, use haste or invisibility to get your party members in safety.
As for your next question, an Archer-Mage is not possible, since rangers cant dual class. A multiclass archer-mage doesnt exist,so that isnt an option either.
However, you can make some sort of archer-mage, with the use of ShadowKeeper. But I can tell you from my own experience, that that is quite hard. UserUnfriendly explained it to me quite often and detailed, but its a long and complicated process. If you are really set on making a mage with archer abbilities I can give you the information you need though...

I don't have an answer to your problem with Demons, as I like fighting them.
With regards to Character generation, an Archer(Ranger)/Mage is not possible without doing some pretty advanced stuff in Shadow-Keeper. However, you can install a Generic Archer(Fighter) from the Tactics mod. If you pick a Human with decent stats, you can Daul-Class to a Mage (I suggest level 12 or 13). Or, you can create a demi-human Generic Archer & make him multi-class in Shadow-Keeper.
By the way, a Generic Archer-Mage is a very good character. Most battles, just pelt with arrows. Tough ones, throw a few spells & pelt with arrows in between.
Warning: If you do install the Tactics mod, I suggest you only install the Generic Archer Kit. The rest of the mod makes many of the battles way harder (how about 5-6 20+ level characters in Jon's dungeon!) I wouldn't recommend trying that until you have played for a while. I still don't know how to defeat many of them without resorting to cheese.

1. The demons you normally fight are probably summoned. Real demons are not affected by Protection from Evil.
2 Dual class (i never dualed so ask some one else) or shadow keeper
EDIT: While writing this 2 posts apeared

Final Batttle
ok let me throw my two cents in, and this could be complete BS but I think because your fighting in one of the many planes of hell, or on the demons home turf this spell will not function the same as in the prime material plane (earth). Hows that ?

try hitting those demons with g deathblow, and melf minute meteors...
improve haste a fighter with g deathblow, and use either ranged or melee weapons, and hit g deathblow...you will be very pleasantly surprised...
1 hit=dead demon...
you know, that trick with multiclassing with the tactics mod installed...that is actually an excellent trick!!!!
I wish i had thought of it...
now, without tactics mod, a archer cleric is possible...a multiclass ranger cleric, and change kit to archer...

Here's what I do. I try to cast haste and then get a Time Stop off once the demons come out. If you have ToB installed and through some lucky fluke (or through sheer evil and many guard battles) have reached level 21 have your thief cast one of the scrolls and then start wailing away. Either that, if you PC is a thief have him litter the battle ground with traps. And I mean SATURATE THE ENTIRE AREA WITH THEM.
Should take care of most of your problems in no time.
Mmmm... Swisscheesed Demon...

the last time i played the final battle without tactics mod installed was literally years ago...but I distinctly remember that the traps disappeared when the demons came...i think there was a map change, or something...

Hmmm, yes, well. Considering that it is only some advice on the fly and I've only beat the game twice now, and never used trap in the final battle... I wouldn't know about the erasing traps thing. Well phooey. But I still recommend using a time stop early on to take care of the demons or to get in any needed summon in safety.

Newbie alert!
Snap, Shakey. I came late to this awesome game and have just finished it. My first post here, so apologies if this has been done to death...
I found, by accident, first attempt that:
<SPOILER>
If you conjure a fire elemental before you open the doors, it is unaffected by the blast which scatters your party. It gets stuck into Irenicus straight away, ruining his best spells and giving you plenty of time to mash those demons at your leisure. When he's spent his wad and turns into the slayer he goes and hides; a True Seeing is all you need to track him down and take him out.
</SPOILER>
I too would be surprised if Protection from Evil worked in Hell. Otherwise there'd be thousands of paladins rushing round mashing all and sundry.
cheers
d.
