Finger of death sucks

Anyway, I just finished Senai and was feeling kinda nasty upon my return to Ankethlan.. So I noticed three cows walking about and cast finger of death on one of them with my 21 level Sorcerer... Oh my.

Hold your breath - the cow saves and i read that i did 12 damage to the cow and now it runs circles in fear!
So much for the 8th level death spell.. If you can't manage to kill a cow with it what use in it at all :)
Anyway, I laughed my pants off :D

LOL! Go cow go!

Finger of Death does indeed suck, though I did kill something important with it once. Woo!

Well, Maharlika, definetely i believe it was just pure luck for that poor cow, since it rolled 18 to save.. But the fact was really funny :D

I guess Mr. Sleep's cow was darn lucky too! :D

He must have fed his cows with one of his placebo stuff he uses for his pipe... ;)

FoD can be a very effective spell. It's like any of those which engage a save for spells: just lower the resistance of your opponent, first.

Frequently this is time-consuming, but it's amazing how effectively and quickly it will work on occasion. I once lowered the resistance of a big demon while doing the Planar Sphere Quest, and cast that miserable level 2 aging spell on it. Believe it or not, the thing took! A summoned monster gave it a tiny cut, about 3 hitpoints of damage, and it keeled over. Probably cholesterol-clogged veins, IMO.

Well sure, everybody knows that, and some nasty casters kill dragons this way (time stop, improved alacrity, 7 lower resistance, time stop, improved alacrity, lots of nasty damaging spells  ) -- but the COW!!!!!

That cow probably survived and resistant from that Mad Cow disease...

Hey, Rentgen! Better get a DNA sample of that COW. You'd probably get a Nobel Peace Prize for that! :D

so will we see totemic animal, Spirit Cow?

With the infamous cow dropping on you from above as attack? This is a wild surge effect, ya know...

Any spell that depends on a failed save should better have something to make up for it... In the case of Finger of Death, this is a -2 save penalty, insta-kill, and a bit of damage if the save passes. This is not worth a level 8 slot, IMO. Polymorph Other also insta-kills on a failed save, but is only a level 4 spell.

I'd have to agree with Xyx. Much as FoD is a fun spell to use, there just aren't that many 8th level slots for the enterprising young mage or sorc, and there are far better options out there.

Nice guide, btw, Xyx. Reminds me of something I did back when I played Gemstone III. Ah, those days of endlessly obsessing gameplay... ;)

no doubt, fable.

i <3 my computer games. every now and then some form of a "life" will manifest itself and i will go weeks without the computer. dont take for granted the "nothing better to do" factor. its a blessing. really.

Forget the cow making it's save. I want to know how it has more than 12 H.P.! - Curdis

Cows with guns.......

Well, there are 3 types of cows in the game. Two types have only 6 HP, so they do not count. Nevertheless there is type of cow with 60 HP, 50% resistnce to slashing, AC 5 and 18 for all saves. I guess, you've got one :D
Moreover, all cows are level 1 mages  without spells, though
Not mentioning that all they are males
:o
