Can a fighter/thief (or other multi-class thief) from BG1 be imported into BG2 and become a fighter/assassin? I haven't bought BG2 yet, but intend to soon...

I'd like to take a character all through BG1 and into BG2 and would like to be an assassin in BG2 - can I do this with multi-classed thieves (e.g. fighter/thief, illusionist/thief etc.) or only single-class?
