And suddenly, my Barbarian can't fight!

Poor guy. All of a sudden, every time combat starts and it comes around to his turn, his 'hourglass' on the left side of the screen comes up empty! I have no idea what happened. I suspect bug, but I could have done something stupid....

is he by chance heavily encumbered?

Good idea, but....

No, he's not encumbered, diseased, or fatigued. I have rebooted, reloaded, and rested. He can walk and talk out of combat, but is helpless in combat mode.

Perhaps he went Sir Robin on the bit, and needs his loin cloth changed.

Or, does he have any negative effects on him. Perhaps you should investigate the radial menu; something maybe selected that shouldn't be. Weak, I know, I'm reaching here to find an answer.

You could also search the atari forums for ToEE. It's chok full of haters and game bashers.

Thanks Ned. I checked all the things you mentioned, and no joy. I have also been scanning the atari forums and I haven't found any similar problems listed.

I went ahead and replaced my L4 halforc Barb with a L1 Dwarven Fighter. Amazingly, the little guy survived the fight with the behemoth frog (plus another frog, four lizardmen, and a seahag!) north of Nulb, so things are looking up for him! :D I don't mind replacing the Barbarian, since character generation is half the fun of the game. ;)

I must've missed the bit how you can swap charactes on the fly. Where is this in the rulebook?

You can drop player characters from the party and add new ones when you are in one of the two inns - just click on the book lying on the desk. It will give you the screen where you add or create characters. You can create new characters and add them to your party (if you have the room), but they will come in at level 1 and naked (unlike when you start the game and all characters have basic equipment). If you click on character portraits of those that are in your party, you can remove them. Note that the character is deleted in the sense that all his equipment (take it away first) and growth will be removed. You will be left with the Level 1 character you originally rolled up.

One problem with bringing in new characters is that they come in naked, as I said. This isn't too much of a big deal, except for bards who come in without an instrument. I have yet to find a bard instrument in any shop. This gives them a -2 on perform.

Early on, I didn't like a dwarven thief that I was playing with. So I dumped her and created a cleric in her place. Since this is my first time through the game, I'm not worrying about maximizing the characters.

I want to spam you comments, visions of beavis and butthead dancing in my head.

That is a drag about the bard instrument. Just like sling bullets. So now greyhawk is devoid of bard instruments for sale, sling bullets for sale, and of course, there are no enemy spellcasters in greyhawk.
