I have a level4 cleric with a 7.5 Use Magic Device skill. I can't use the scroll of heal on Bing. When I try to use it I get the following message:

Use Magic device: Emulate Ability Score Failed

Must my cleric be of a higher skill level before I can use the scroll?

Here's what you do.

All you need to do is have the "Read Magic" spell memorized for him to read the scroll. UMD is for arcane spells, and generally is more useful (if at all) to bards.

Anyways, after you have Read Magic memorized, you can then cast the Heal spell from the scroll via the Cleric's radial menu (hover your cursor over the backpack icon that contains the inventory option tag, and a tag for using scrolls will be there). Then you just cast the scroll on Bing. And so Bing is cured and there was much rejoicing. *a faint "Yaaaay" is heard in the background* (If you've seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you'd understand)

That does make alot of sense but the thing is I have done exactly the way you described to me and it dosen't work... I pick the scroll of heal from the radial menu, clicking on Bing and still I recive this message: Use Magic device:

Emulate Ability Score Failed

And I have the patch so it shouldn't be a bug.

Hmmm...

Let me see, read magic is memorized (in other words, it would be listed as an available spell in the magic radial menu, under Level 0 spells), and yet your cleric is having trouble using the scroll?

Unless you've already got alot of experience with your cleric, my best advice, regrettedly, is that you recruit a different priest at the Welcome Wench Inn via the book on the desk by the proprieter of the inn. If you make a new cleric with no skill in UMD(and don't think you'll find too much frustration in losing the experience of your current cleric), then that may allow that cleric, with Read Magic memorized, to be able to cast the scroll. I have a good (or bad, which ever fits best) feeling that Use Magic Device is coming in conflict with Read Magic.

Honestly, that's the best idea I can come up with right now, stormrider. Wish I could think of anything better, but I can't. Sorry.

But what could cause this problem? I get the same message when i try to use the scroll with my wizard.

Well, personally I've *always* used the Potion of Heal that was found in the same bookcase (At least I believe it was in the same bookcase.) since potions seem to be able to be used by anyone.

I can't find that potion of Heal anywhere. Is there somewhere that I could buy one or otherwise find one so that I can complete that quest?

zFACTOR, the potion is probably in the same place as the scrolls in the Church of Cuthbert.

If you haven't gotten those scrolls, it's because the bookcase they are in is not lootable until certain quest flags are hit. The bookcase is the one in the first room upstairs after clicking the stairs icon, before going to Terjon's room.

I actually haven't identified the potions yet, I haven't figured out a way to do it cheap, like Read Magic on scrolls, so I don't want to burn thru my gold again until I've looted the moathouse.

found the potion I needed in nulb. I just go to a place that I can rest and use identify a bunch. I also found a wand of identify once, that was good in the temple but it ran out fast.

All this seems strange.

I used the Heal scroll on Bing with a level 1 Cleric with no problem at all.

I have Cleric level 2 and I cannot even try scroll of heal (I found two and both are identified via Read Magic spell) because I don't see them in circle menu (I see all other Scrolls). Is this a bug or something?

What is your clerics Wisdom? If I recall correctly, you need as much wisdom to cast the spell from a scroll as if you had just cast it from memory. Try casting owls wisdom or drinking a potion of the same name and see what happens.

c'mon guys... what is your cleric's wisdom? you won't be able to cast the spell if your wisdom isn't at least equal to 10+ the spell's level. got it? so your "Use Magic Device" check will emulate the ability... Wisdom in this case, in order for you to cast the spell. the ability score you gain after emulating is your use magic device check -15... or... if you get a 20... 27.5-15... 12.5! is this enough to cast the heal spell? guess not... maybe you should play the real game, it's really better!
